Happy Tuesday! We're inching closer and closer to the end of the Fantasy Baseball season and the end of the MLB's 2012 regular season. If you're in H2H leagues, we hope you advanced past what was likely your first week of the playoffs last week. There are certainly a few players to thank for that including Corbin Burnes and Francisco Lindor -- one you expected and the other coming out of nowhere. |
Now as we turn the page to this week, we have a pair of pitchers coming through big for Fantasy owners on Monday evening. Both pitchers were either drafted in the mid-to-late round or scooped up midseason as a top prospect. Both delivered for those who kept them in lineups. A few big guns came through on the opposite side of the ball and we'll get to that as well before diving into some of Scott White's favorite waiver pickups. |
Of course, as always, you can follow to make sure you get the latest episodes of Fantasy Baseball Today right when they drop on Apple and Spotify. |

Alcantara continues to look like a 2022 breakout pick |
|
Marlins SP Sandy Alcantara was brilliant on Monday night, and if you take away a brutal and uncharacteristic 10-run outing from earlier in the second half, he has quietly been one of Fantasy's best pitchers. On Monday, Alcantara delivered eight innings of one hit ball against the Nationals. And yes, it was the lowly Nationals, but that shouldn't take anything away from another outing where an opposing team basically couldn't get the ball out of the infield against the young Marlins starter. |
There was one scare in the game -- when Alcantara took a comebacker off his leg in the fourth inning -- but it turned out to be nothing more than a scare. Since the start of August, Alcantara has pitched scoreless ball in three of his outings and allowed one run in three of his other outings. In all six of those starts, Alcantara lasted at least seven innings. |
Due to mostly bad luck, Alcantara is 9-13 on the season, but he's shaping up as a breakout candidate who will be very buzzy during draft season next March and April. That was the case this past April but more so in the mid-round range. It's possible Alcantara works his way up draft boards much higher in next year's draft, and it will be difficult to argue against investing in him. |

Manoah continues to deliver when called upon |
It hasn't exactly been a banner year for top prospect call-ups, but Blue Jays SP Alek Manoah has delivered in just about every outing. On Monday, Manoah struck out 10 despite a difficult matchup against Tampa. He also held the Rays to just one hit through eight shutout innings. |
The big reason to be excited about what we saw from Manoah is due to the swing and miss stuff. He was specifically dominant on Monday with his slider, and that is quickly becoming one of baseball's better pitches from any pitcher. He delivered 38 sliders against the Rays and induced 13 swinging strikes on those pitches. Oddly enough, Manoah's two best starts of his young career came in this matchup against the Rays, but he has been a Fantasy Baseball asset regardless. He's now up to 6-2 on the season with a 3.39 ERA through 17 starts. |

Waiver wire adds |
Every week Scott White delivers the top players to prioritize adding on your waiver wire and this week he had a special treat when he broke down 10 players who are perfect for your Fantasy playoffs stretch run. Below, we'll highlight some of the players he broke down in his column. You can find the entire 10-player list here. |
Ranger Suarez, RP, Phillies: I've been banging the drum for Ranger Suarez ever since he joined the rotation. If you can't see why, I'll spell it out for you: E-R-A. Sure, we recognize these days that it's not the best predictor, but ... his is 1.38. And it's 1.67 in his eight starts, meaning he hasn't lost anything since moving out of the bullpen. The key is not allowing a single home run during that stretch, which makes sense given that his 60.7 percent ground-ball rate would rank a distant first among qualifiers, and he has a respectable strikeout rate to go with it. He's looking at matchups against the Cubs, Orioles, Pirates and Marlins the rest of the way, too, so let's not put him off anymore. |
Frank Schwindel, 1B, Cubs: You could be forgiven for thinking Frank Schwindel is destined to slip into mediocrity. He's a 29-year-old rookie, after all, and had gone a combined 4 for 35 with the Royals and Athletics before joining the Cubs. But with this extended look, which was made possible by the Cubs' deadline sell-off, it's becoming clearer he never got a fair shake due to his lack of on-base skills and limited defensive profile. He always hit in the minors, though, and showed it at times in spring training as well. With another 6-for-12 showing this weekend, which included a home run and double, it's time to take him seriously. |
Nicky Lopez, SS, Royals: Think back to before the season and the enthusiasm you or others like you had for Nick Madrigal. Now, look at Nicky Lopez's numbers since the end of May. Hasn't he been basically everything you hoped Madrigal would be -- i.e., lots of batting average and a pretty good steals total from a second baseman? Yeah, that's the ticket, except that Lopez is also eligible at shortstop. He knows what he is, keeping the ball on the ground and punching it to all fields rather than selling out for home runs. The minor-league track record backs it up, too. If you can do without power, he can be useful. |
