A man is dead and two others were wounded in what police believe was a gang-related shooting on the city's East Side. Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, San Antonio police Chief William McManus said two detectives and an officer were near the 500 block of Blaine Street to follow up on an overnight shooting. During that time, and not more than 40 yards from where the officers were standing, McManus said, three men in a black Ford Edge SUV pulled up at the corner of Hays and Lockhart streets and opened fired on the three victims. RELATED: Same person may be responsible for overnight East Side shootings, police say McManus said after the gunmen shot the victims, they then pointed their guns at officers and began firing at them before speeding off northbound on Hays Street. Despite being fired at, McManus said, one of the officers who was "within line of sight" chose not to fire back at the shooters because of innocent bystanders. The man who was found dead is believed to be in his late teens to his early 20s. The two other victims, described as being "younger," were rushed to a local hospital, one of which was listed in critical condition, and the other is in unknown condition, McManus said. McManus said in the past few days, officers have responded to at least four other shootings in the same area. The Blaine Street shooting happened around 4 a.m. Tuesday, and just a few minutes after, officers began receiving calls for another shooting in the 2000 block of East Crockett Street. Nearly two dozen shell casings were found on the ground between the two shooting scenes. No one was injured by gunfire in those two incidents, according to police. McManus said police believe Tuesday afternoon's deadly shooting was fueled by gang members. At this time, McManus said investigators are working to determine if the recent shootings are all connected. McManus said police need the residents in the affected areas to work and talk with them to deter future violence.
