Comedian Sarah Silverman did something that has become increasingly rare this week: she called out a fellow liberal for spreading misinformation.
The saga began when MSNBC host Joy Reid shared a CNN report on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposing to establish a civilian military force in his state.
"This is fascisty bananas," Reid wrote of the proposal. What Reid did not note is that civilian military forces are not some unique authoritarian fantasy of DeSantis. Twenty-three other states have such forces, including New York.
"Please read the article before you post this stuff you’re a news outlet," Silverman replied to Reid. "The truth has to matter."
It was a very reasonable request of a news anchor. But according to Silverman, it prompted a wave of criticism.
“We can’t even criticize the people on our own side, we can’t even critique anyone in your own party without punishment," she said. Silverman noted that she was accused of a racist attack on Reid by a host of The View.
“I cannot believe I need to say this, but I did not criticize Joy Ann because she’s Black, but because she’s a Harvard-educated journalist with the responsibility of showing the whole picture and not just a piece of a picture,” Silverman said.
Correct.

According to a stunning new report from Reuters, a publicist for Kanye West actually visited a Georgia election official weeks after the 2020 election in an effort to intimidate her into confessing to voter fraud.

"Weeks after the 2020 election, a Chicago publicist for hip-hop artist Kanye West traveled to the suburban home of Ruby Freeman, a frightened Georgia election worker who was facing death threats after being falsely accused by former President Donald Trump of manipulating votes. The publicist knocked on the door and offered to help.
The visitor, Trevian Kutti, gave her name but didn’t say she worked for West, a longtime billionaire friend of Trump. She said she was sent by a “high-profile individual,” whom she didn’t identify, to give Freeman an urgent message: confess to Trump’s voter-fraud allegations, or people would come to her home in 48 hours, and she’d go to jail."
Thankfully, Freeman refused. But it's a shocking story, and one that does not reflect kindly on Kanye West — who continues to employ Kutti, per Reuters.
