EU’s approach to Advanced Artificial Intelligence - Time for a “CERN for AI”? Thursday, 30 January 2025 | 12:30 - 13:45 CET REGISTER HERE
The European Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) entered into force in August 2024, with the aim to foster responsible artificial intelligence development and deployment in the EU. Moreover, in her Political guidelines for the next European Commission, European Commission President von der Leyen proposed setting up a European AI Research Council, similar to CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research). Stakeholders believe that, despite leading in the field of AI regulation, the EU has failed to produce a booming domestic industry. This is in part because of the lack of computational resources and funding. They also believe that trustworthy advanced AI (AAI), which refers to lawful, ethical, and robust highly capable general-purpose models or systems built on top of such general-purpose models, is the next step and one of the emerging technologies that the EU should be paying more attention to. The next few months are crucial for scaling up AI development in Europe and for this purpose, developing a European AI Research Council.
