Book of the week
| Dearest Thread readers, Kerri Miller is out this week on vacation so we will be hearing from another bookworm in the newsroom, editor Lisa Ryan. When I found out Abby Jimenez was releasing a new book, I immediately made plans to get it that day. The Minnesota author’s romance novels are some of my favorites, so my friend Sam and I headed to Magers & Quinn in Minneapolis to pick up her latest: “Say You’ll Remember Me.” The book’s main plot line is a love story between veterinarian Xavier and mustard marketer and kitten rescuer Samantha. But like all of Jimenez’s books in the Abby-verse, it's so much more than just a love story. It explores parent-child relationships and the sacrifices caretakers — both parents and their adult children – make. Jimenez's ability to dive deep into all forms of love is what makes her books so irresistible. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll want Nadia Cakes (a subtle marketing mention in all of Jimenez’s books — she's a baker as well as an author). But like all rom-coms, you also might shout at the characters for missteps in communication. This couple is terrible at long distance — and I can say that with certainty because I married my long-distance boyfriend. This Great Lakes girlie's one criticism of the book: it makes a big deal about how Xavier didn’t know what a rip current is. Sure, most of our lakes don’t have them, but rip currents are certainly a danger in our biggest lake, Lake Superior, and I’m sure he would be at least slightly aware of their existence. — Lisa Ryan, MPR News
