BY VICKI FERSTEL | Staff writer Monday started with folks in Louisiana and across the nation wondering what effect the Iran-Israel conflict could have on gasoline prices. Staff writer Hannah Levitan reported that oil prices rose on Sunday night but tumbled Monday afternoon following an Iranian missile attack on U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq. Leave it to sports columnist Scott Rabalais to write the near-perfect column about LSU's near-perfect College World Series win. Rabalais watched as LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson and his wife, Maureen, exited the elevator at their hotel. "Tucked under his arm was the prized heirloom they picked up during their two-week stay in Omaha: The NCAA championship trophy. "You could tell these are the moments that make all the work worthwhile. The hours of practice. The endless recruiting phone calls. Skipping team dinner at a swanky Omaha steakhouse to prepare for the next day’s opponent." Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services will fold into the Baton Rouge Fire Department under a merger plan that Mayor Sid Edwards announced Monday. Edwards said none of the fire department's 563 employees or EMS' 259 employees will be laid off. Staff writer Patrick Sloan-Turner reports that the merger, which aims to reduce duplication, will be phased in gradually, with Fire Chief Michael Kimble as the top official.
