Seal All Rose Bush Cuts

By likekinds

A cut branch on a rose. When pruning a rose bush or when taking cuttings for the home or rooting, the cuts should be sealed. A white waterproof glue should work well. Sealing is to prevent access of the rose cane borer. This insect can cause much damage to the plant. My advice is to seal all cuts whether made during borer season or not.

Create a Humid Environment for Plants

By 15mhhm15

A makeshift terrarium made from two clear plastic containers, with a plant inside.Place two same sized containers together with plant inside to increase humidity for tropical plants. This is a thrifty method instead of buying a humidifier. Also works for plants that you may purchase online and came from the mail - to help the plants adjust and recover from the transport!

Robin's Nest

By Jess (TF Editor)

Robin's NestOur spring cleaning and repairs were temporarily interrupted when we discovered two robins making a nest outside our back door. They found our light fixture to be the perfect place. They got all sorts of material to make the base of the nest, including some shredded pieces of tarp that my son missed when cleaning up.

Painted Pinecone as Faux Succulent

By Robyn

A pinecone painted green and placed in a small pot.I made a small faux succulent out of a green painted pinecone. I also made a planter that fit it just right out of a plastic scoop. When the pinecone is painted green and dried, it looks like a succulent plant in a little planter. I placed it in my garden, and it looks adorable!

June Is Plant Rooting Month

By likekinds

June Is Plant Rooting MonthJune is the best month for rooting most plants. Now, as to the purpose of this post. It's not a tip nor a bragging post. It is to offer a word of encouragement. To those of you who would say 'I don't have a green thumb, I can't root anything', my reply is, 'Nonsense'!

This Week's Questions
Mother Duck Seems to Have Abandoned Nest
We were outside today with two dogs and five people. My granddaughter noticed a mother duck on a nest. We soon left the area, but now the mother has been away from the nest of 10 eggs for a couple of hours. Do you think she will return? She seemed stressed while we were there.
John Deere Riding Mower Stalling When Clutch Released
My John Deere riding mower, LT133, stalls every time I take my foot off the clutch. I can start the mower and it will run fine for a minute or two, but then it starts to stall every time I let the clutch out. It doesn't matter if the blades are engaged or not or if it's in gear or not. As long as the clutch is pushed in the mower runs fine, but as I take my foot off the clutch the motor stalls.
Keeping Deer Out of the Yard
Deer have used my yard this past winter and torn up spots of my grass. Besides all the deer dropping, patches of grass are completely gone. I've spent money to keep my lawn looking good until the deer have taken over.
Killing Weeds Before Putting in a Raised Vegetable Bed
I'm putting in a raised vegetable planting bed over a rocky area infested with invasive morning glory and large-form periwinkle roots. We have dug, pulled roots, and sifted the soil and after a 2 week period covered with tarps, found vigorous morning glory growth possibly from seeds. How long does the plant killing action of vinegar last?
Do Bird Deterrents Affect Hummingbirds?
We have two hummingbird feeders near our deck. But we have a problem with other birds nearby getting into flower plants (meant to attract hummingbirds) and trying to make nests on decking lighting. If I buy spinwheels to deter the larger birds, will that also keep away the hummingbirds?
