My dad worked for United Airlines, so I grew up on airplanes. I’ve explored 38 countries (and counting!) with plenty more on my bucket list. Let’s get you the best deals! How to land the best flight deals ✈️ Check for 24-hour price drops: Booked a flight? Some airlines let you cancel within 24 hours for free. If you find a lower price, cancel and rebook. Easy savings. 🔔 Set up price alerts: Google Flights and Kayak will email you when prices drop. The best time to book? One to three months ahead for domestic flights and four to six months out for international. (Note to self: This means next week.) 📅 Fly on the cheap days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are usually the cheapest. Red-eyes and early morning flights also cost less and are less likely to be delayed or canceled. 🛫 Be flexible: Try Google’s Explore feature to spot budget-friendly dates. Skyscanner’s Cheapest Month tool is neat. Instead of choosing a date, click Flexible Dates and watch the prices fluctuate. 🛑 Hidden-city ticketing (use with caution): Skiplagged finds flights where your destination is a layover, which can save you cash. Just don’t check a bag. It won’t follow you. VIP experience secrets If "budget" is not in your lexicon, you can bypass many airport hassles. PS (Private Suite) at LAX and ATL Get private TSA screening and a terminal with no lines. Think velvet couches and chilled champagne. Board via a private car on the tarmac and have a similar arrival service. PS costs about $4,000 for the first passenger. It’s an Amex Centurion cardholder perk, and that’s how I get to use it. I saw Kanye West and his wife about a month ago on my way back from Paris. Fortunately, she was clothed. I couldn’t bare it. Butler/Concierge Fast Track Service Royal Airport Concierge meets you at the curb, handles your luggage, escorts you through security and takes you to a VIP lounge.Delta VIP Select Enjoy a private check-in lounge with champagne, canapés, private TSA screening and a ride to the plane on the tarmac. Costs $500 for the first passenger and $100 for each additional one. Here’s a video about it. United Global Services It’s invitation-only offering private check-in for United Airlines Global Services members.Hawaiian Airlines Premium Airport Service Check-in is completed before you arrive, with priority baggage handling, expedited TSA lines and an escort to your gate. You get access to a private lounge featuring a liquor menu, meals and showers. Prices start at $500 for two with the option to use HawaiianMiles. Adios, beaches I hope these hacks helped you. Now, where should I go next? When you rate this newsletter at the end, let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear your suggestions. |

DAILY TECH UPDATE Billionaire AI battle: Altman vs. Musk Elon Musk offered $97 billion for ChatGPT. Sam Altman fired back with a $9.7 billion bid for X. The backstory? Lawsuits, insults and a fight over AI’s future. Listen on Komando.com → |
WEB WATERCOOLER Reddit getting paywalled: That’s when you hit a post online and it’s blocked until you pay a membership fee. It’s coming to Reddit, at least for certain content. Reddit went public last March, so it makes sense they’re looking for more ways to make money. 🚨 Deepfakes going to a new level: TikTok owner ByteDance built an AI tool that makes realistic videos of people talking and singing from a single photo. OmniHuman can take an image (half-body or full-body) and bring it to life. Check out this example of Albert Einstein. Snazzy but scary in the wrong hands. And let’s not forget this is Chinese-owned. I wouldn’t hand over any personal pics. Miracle drug? Wow, this is big. A clinical trial just confirmed semaglutide (the active drug in Ozempic) helps people drink less alcohol. Folks with moderate alcohol use disorder who took a low dose drank about 40% less and had fewer cravings. 🍏 So long, farewell: We’ll get the full scoop on the next budget iPhone on Feb. 19, but the SE 4 is finally ditching the Home button. Touch ID? That’s gone, too. Face ID is taking over. Lightning charging is out, too, making way for USB‑C. 💘 Dating apps are out: My son has been telling me this for years. Folks are still finding love online but through shared interests and hobbies instead. Nate and Jess developed a long-distance relationship playing World of Warcraft. And it’s not just gaming. People are meeting through fitness apps like Strava, too, and social media DMs. 🔪 The short fortune teller who escaped from prison was a small medium at large: A true crime YouTube channel is racking up views, and most people listening don’t realize every “true story” is completely fake. They’re all AI-generated. The channel owner called it “True Crime” because the genre gets the most clicks. Nice ploy, buddy. |
TECH LIFE UPGRADES AI can you give the right vocab: Say you need to take the car to the mechanic and don’t know what to say. Start with ChatGPT. “My car takes longer to start, and sometimes, there's a lack of power when accelerating. What's going on?" This works for any subject where you’re not the expert! 💬 From Á to Ź: Need to type accents for Spanish words? On Macs, just press and hold the letter on the keyboard. Options for different accents will pop up. For Windows in Word or Outlook, press and hold Ctrl + apostrophe + comma, then release before typing the letter for an acute accent. Hey, web developers: Have you tried Amazon Q Developer? Think of it as your intern to help write code, create README files and find security holes. There’s a free tier for 50 chats per month, or pay $19 per month for more perks. It’s not a sponsor, but it just caught my eye. 🐕 Ruff, ruff: Sniffspot turns your outdoor space into a private dog park. Some homeowners earn up to $3,000 per month and don’t even have to be home to manage it. I wonder if you have to pick up the poop yourself. I will never become a flyfishing expert: OK, never say never, but I got sick of seeing ads for them. In Google’s Ad Center, you can browse everything Google knows about you (and delete it), block ads you don’t like and adjust the categories you see. A lovely Sunday activity. |
