1. TOKYO SEES LUXE HOTEL BOOM BEFORE 2020 OLYMPICS: Tokyo is experiencing a luxury hotel boom as developers want to feature their new and renovated properties ahead of the 2020 Olympics. A Four Seasons and Marriott International’s Edition are both opening in Japan’s capital city by next summer, and the historic Oksana hotel is slated to reopen Thursday after a $1 billion renovation. The Wall Street Journal: “The country is expecting to set a record of 40 million visitors next year when the Summer Games come to Tokyo, up from 31 million in 2018. Tourists spent more than $12 billion on lodging last year, according to government figures. A common practice in the more recent luxury hotels in Tokyo is to occupy the top few floors of office towers. What is being called the Tokyo Edition Toranomon sits atop a 38-story tower in the Toranomon business district and is a collaboration with American hotelier Ian Schrager, best known for pioneering the boutique hotel concept.”

2. M.P.A.A. VENUE COULD REPLACE NEWSEUM FOR STAR-STUDDED D.C. EVENTS: With the Newseum in Washington closing indefinitely at the end of 2019, the Motion Picture Association of America’s renovated headquarters might be the new venue for red carpet events in the nation’s capital. Opening next year, the venue will have a new event space and a private movie theater. Washingtonian: “In a signal of what the M.P.A.A. could be planning, it recently hired longtime PR exec Emily Lenzner, formerly of Atlantic Media and ABC News, to run its communications department. Lenzner’s work on the increasingly influential Atlantic Festival could translate nicely to an effort to make the M.P.A.A. a major player in the event-hosting game.”

3. JENNIFER LOPEZ MIGHT HEADLINE SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW: Jennifer Lopez is in talks to headline Super Bowl LIV in 2020. The championship game will be held in Miami, where the pop star and actress and her husband Alex Rodriguez frequently vacation. Billboard: “Though nothing is confirmed, Lopez sat down with Hoda Kotb for a SiriusXM interview, where she played a game in which she can answer the questions asked or shoot money out of a money machine if she declines to respond. When asked if she'll be taking the Super Bowl stage, she giggled and simply replied, ‘I don't know.’”

AUSTIN: Austin Proper Hotel & Residences will open in January. The property will have 244 hotel rooms, nearly 10,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and multiple dining and beverage concepts from McGuire Moorman Hospitality.
