We know we say it every month, but September really has been a busy time here at Bradt... First, we published two fabulous new French titles: a standalone guide to the ever-changing city of Lille and the second edition of our guide to the beautiful Vendée. We discovered where to find the northern lights in Greenland, what to eat in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the best nature spots in Alabama and how to explore the magical hilltop towns of Istria. We also launched our 2025 New Travel Writer Year of the Competition. This year's theme is 'A Hasty Exit' and the entries are rolling in. For your chance to win a 4-night break to Pas-de-Calais, enter the competition here. After a series of debates here at HQ, September also saw us finalise our list of the best safaris in Africa. From birding in Ethiopia to gorilla tracking in Uganda, these wildlife experiences promise adventures you won't forget. Last, but most definitely not least, we hosted our huge 50th anniversary event at the Royal Geographical Society. After months of planning, it was a great pleasure to celebrate with so many friends of Bradt. It’s because of your support that we’re able to maintain our pioneering spirit after all these years and we had a wonderful evening doing just that. Read on for more of September's best bits! Nicknamed “America’s Amazon” for its record breaking biodiversity, the state of Alabama has an impressive collection of natural wonders which you can visit by road. | Ad For over 25 years, our ‘New Travel Writer of the Year’ competition has been seeking out and championing new writing talent and entries to this year's competition are NOW OPEN! THE THEME The theme for this year’s competition is A Hasty Exit. Entrants are invited to submit an original piece of writing of between 600 and 800 words that focuses on this topic. It is not compulsory to include the phrase within the body of the piece itself, but the piece must very clearly adhere to this theme. THE PRIZE Three finalists will be invited to attend the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards in London in early 2025, where the winner will be announced along with all the other awards. The overall winner will win a 4-night break to Pas-de-Calais in northern France, with a tailor-made itinerary taking in the region’s towns, coastal villages, countryside and cultural sites. They will also be commissioned to write an article about their trip which will be published on the Bradt website, as well as in Traveller magazine. You can find out more here.
