It's going to be a hot one today |
Michigan is experiencing quite the heat wave this week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for roughly half of Lower Michigan. You might want to get used to the extra warmth for the next few days. The heat and high humidity is expected to last until a cold front sweeps through the area Friday evening. Things should start feeling slightly cooler by the weekend. In the meantime, the Genesee County Health Department has issued a few tips to help you stay safe as you beat the heat. |

2 rounds of severe t-storms possibly roaming through Michigan Tuesday into Wednesday |
Hot and humid conditions combined with a few upper-air disturbances could produce a few short segmented lines of severe thunderstorms over the next two days. Tuesday has all of Lower Michigan covered with a 15 percent to 29 percent chance of severe wind gusts at the beginning of a thunderstorm. The storms are expected to exit southeast Lower Michigan by Wednesday morning. More details: The National Weather Service says the severe weather could pack damaging winds and large hail. Tornadoes are not expected. Some areas could see locally heavy rain and cloud-to-ground lightning if these storms do pop up. Heating up: Most of Michigan’s southern border is under an excessive heat warning for Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The heat index is expected to hit 105 degrees or hotter. Heat indices south of I-94 could still warm above the 100-degree mark Wednesday also. |

Extreme heat forces Grand Rapids Public Schools to cancel classes Tuesday |
Grand Rapids Public Schools will be closed today due to extreme heat forecasted. The temperature is expected to be in the low 90s, but extreme humidity will make it feel like up to 96 degrees. While all school buildings will be closed, the district’s administrative offices will be open at 1331 Martin Luther King Jr. St. SE., according to the district’s Facebook post. In Kalamazoo County: Portage Public Schools and Comstock Public Schools both announced the half-days via the districts’ respective social media accounts. While Comstock Public Schools will send students home from all its facilities after a half-day, Portage Public Schools officials announced its district’s half-day plans would apply to facilities that lack air conditioning units. Be safe: Several Jackson-area districts are also planning early releases on Tuesday. The National Weather Service forecasts a high near 93 degrees on Tuesday in Jackson, with heat index values as high as 105 degrees. |

Ex-Michigan lineman cut by Minnesota Vikings after only a few days |
It’s cut week in the NFL, and one former Michigan football player was released after only a few days with his new team. Chuck Filiaga, a Michigan offensive lineman for five seasons, was released by the Minnesota Vikings on Monday. He’d signed with Minnesota on Thursday. See you later: Pat O’Connor’s time in Detroit seems to have come to an end — for now, at least. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Lions are parting ways with the veteran defensive lineman, wrapping up his second stint with the team. In baseball: Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez will undergo season-ending hip surgery, manager A.J. Hinch announced to reporters on Monday in Chicago. Baez had already been placed on the 10-day injured list but was transferred to the 60-day injured list. |

It’s a girl! Michigan zoo wants you to name its adorable infant gorilla |
New addition: The Detroit Zoo is welcoming the arrival of its first infant gorilla in the zoo's 96-year history. The zoo is giving the public a chance to weigh in on naming the bundle of joy by voting for one of five names with a $10 donation. Voting ends on Monday, Sept. 9. Breaking records: The largest lake sturgeon in the history of the annual state survey was captured last week. The monster fish was 75.2 inches long, or about 6-foot, 3 inches, which made it the largest sturgeon by length that the survey has ever recorded, Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced. It weighed 125 pounds. In case you missed it: An animal shelter near Ann Arbor is seeking information on who left 30 pet birds outside its door. The 26 parakeets and four cockatiels are now receiving medical attention, nutrition and attention at the Humane Society of Huron Valley, officials said. |
