She dreamed of a second child but now says a little white pill cost her a son

In Sayulita, Mexico, her part-time home, Jennifer Nosek’s pregnancy was everything she had hoped for. But in April, her baby died during an intense and excruciating labor. Looking back, she blames her midwife, who Nosek says gave her a white pill she described as a “homeopathic” shortly before her son’s birth.

In a complaint filed with Mexican prosecutors, Nosek alleges that the pill was actually misoprostol, a drug used to induce labor that can be dangerous if given outside of a hospital. As Nosek’s story spread, first within her Sayulita community and then outside of it, other clients emerged, many of whom shared their own concerns about the midwife. NBC News interviewed 10 women about their experiences.
