Jailhouse rocked: Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson ordered all deputies posted in criminal court and other posts back to the jail after a violent weekend that included two deaths. Judges and attorneys were left scrambling Sunday night to figure out how the decision, which puts trials and hearings back online for now, will affect court dockets. Highway to hell: The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet has been closed for years, an admission that the environmental and human costs of the ship channel created decades ago outweighed the benefits to industry. As Mike Smith reports, the bill for those costs is due, and officials are sorting out how to deal with the "hurricane highway" it helped create. Back to work: A federal appeals court ruling late Sunday means state legislators will go back to work in the coming days to figure out how to redraw congressional maps that ensure there are two districts in which Black candidates have a shot of winning. The order merely lifted a stay by a lower court, and as Mark Ballard and Will Sentell explain, the battle is far from over. Gatherings galore: This weekend saw gatherings of many different stripes around the city, and our photographers and reporters were there. There was the World Naked Bike Ride, (with some additional photos here) to promote bicycle safety and awareness, two festivals and the return of the annual Pride Parade. On a more somber note, residents gathered Saturday in Treme to rally against gun violence. A lesson from Denver? Gayle Benson has no plans to sell the Saints or Pelicans anytime soon, but without any heirs, the day will come when the franchises are sold. Columnist Jeff Duncan says the sale of the Denver Broncos has some lessons. Thanks for starting your week with us. Check the latest news all day on NOLA.com. CC |
