Use Safety Pin to Mark Front When Sewing
When I make sweaters for myself or family, I mark the front of the sweater on the right side with a small safety pin. I use safety pins for holding sweater pieces together for sewing them. They are small and easy to spot.
Buy Used Sewing Machine with Manual
I know all people who sew have "family attachments" to certain brands and since there are many who can't afford "brand new". I am suggesting that when you shop for a new (different) machine, and I have had many great ones in my 60 odd years of sewing, be sure to find one with the manual.
Spray Bottle Sidewalk Chalk
It is summertime! This will keep the kids happy for awhile. You will need food coloring, warm water, spray bottle and flour. I get the spray bottles from the dollar store.
Dental Floss to Thread Sewing Needles
You can use dental floss to thread needles. Put a loop of it through the needle and use it as a threader to pull the thread through the sewing needle. Those cheaply made metal ones always break.

Since McCalls seems to run small, should I add an inch or inch and a half? I have never done this before, so thought I would ask if anyone has?
