June was an exciting month for WashU’s sustainability team. Not only were the summer EnviroCorps members onboarded, but the sustainability staff team grew with the addition of communications specialist Daniel Puma and School of Medicine sustainability coordinator Jenna Schaefer. East End Parksmart Certification

WashU's East End Garage has earned the Parksmart Bronze Certification for its high performance and sustainable efforts, including the creation of greenspace, reduced energy consumption and use of localized materials.

Fashion Managing Invasive Species

WashU graduate Kahan Chavda, along with his brother and friend, founded an ecosystem restoration fashion company. Inspired by observing invasive species while scuba diving, Chavda found a way to use the organisms.

Reawakening Sleeping Crops

In a recent paper, Assistant Professor of Archaeology Natalie Mueller reviews the history of native eastern North American crops and explains how they could inform agricultural methods in the era of climate change.

Waste Water to Fertilizer

Researchers in engineering professor Young-Shin Jun's lab developed a novel composite nanotechnology that removes and recovers nutrients from wastewater that can be upcycled as agricultural fertilizer.

Environmental Futures

Window Build Session

Help build insulating window inserts for low-income households in St. Louis. These inserts will enhance households' energy efficiency and improve resident comfort. Capacity is limited, so please RSVP to volunteer.

TreeKeepers Workshop

Thursday, July 17, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Schnuck 202

This workshop is designed for anyone with an interest in trees and tree maintenance. All levels of experience are welcome to participate. This class is offered in partnership with Forest ReLeaf. Please RSVP to attend.

Cortex Storm Clean Up Days

Every 4th Tuesday, 10 a.m. - p.m., North City

The Cortex District has partnered with the North Newstead Association to support tornado relief clean-up efforts in North City on the fourth Tuesday of July and August. Please RSVP if you are able to volunteer.

Perennial Repair Fair

Saturday, June 28, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Perennial

Join Perennial STL for a community repair event. Volunteers will be available to help you fix household items. The event is free to attend, but volunteers charge their own rates for repairs. Fix your worn or broken items.

OneSTL Sustainability Lab

Tuesday, July 29, 3:45-5 p.m., T-REX or Zoom

This will be a discussion of a policy approach called Extended Producer Responsibility, which can lead to reducing and redesigning product packaging and implementing take-back or recycling programs. Join in person or via Zoom.

SPARK Applications Open

The SPARK: Sustainability Leadership Training program invites students to learn and network. It will take place on and off campus, including an overnight retreat. Apply early for guaranteed housing.

The Community Fellows in Residence program is part of The Engaged City, a collaboration between CRE2, Center for the Humanities and Office for Socially Engaged Practice. Learn more and apply.

WashU Libraries Data Rescue Project

Volunteers are invited to contribute to the WashU Libraries' efforts in web archiving and data preservation. This is a joint effort among a group of data organizations. Pitch in to protect data.

Greenway Art Competition

Great Rivers Greenway is searching for two artists or arts organizations to create artwork for permanent sign panels on the Hodiamont Greenway in Gwen Giles Park in St. Louis. Apply by July 17.

The Sustainable Healthcare Leadership Institute is a year-long intensive professional program for mid-career healthcare professionals led by Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. Apply by July 1.

Bike League Hiring Policy Fellow

The League of American Bicyclists is accepting applications for an early career Federal Policy Fellow, a one-year, full-time position based in Washington, D.C. Apply by July 14.

RCO Gear Lending Library

River City Outdoors (RCO) recently launched a gear lending library for St. Louis City residents and St. Louis regional organizations that take groups on outdoor trips. Get some gear and get outside!

Recycle Coach App

Recycle Coach is a mobile app and web widget designed to make recycling sorting easier. Both St. Louis City and County offer a tailored version of the app to their residents.
