| Times Past Canberra supermarkets trialled full-day trading on Saturdays for the first time in the lead-up to Christmas, The Canberra Times wrote on this day 41 years ago. Woolworths, Coles and Youngs supermarkets would stay open till 5pm every Saturday in December 1979 to spread the flow of pre-Christmas shoppers. But G.J. Coles and Company NSW manager G.A. Tate said the trial could extend into January and February if there was demand.
