| IMPORTANT | | Tensions Rise | Chinese Air Force, Navy Encroach on Taiwanese Territory China’s promised post-Pelosi military exercises launched quickly — the navy, air force and other departments were mobilized in six zones around the island, with “precision missile strikes” conducted in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan says there were several instances of brief incursions into its territory, including one incident in which 10 Chinese navy boats were “driven away” by the Taiwan navy. Taipei also scrambled jets amid Chinese aircraft intrusions into Taiwan’s airspace. State-owned news service Xinhua said there’s a deliberate focus on “blockade, sea target assault, strike on ground targets, and airspace control.” Drills are expected to run until Sunday — the first since 1996. | | | Dirty Money | Are British Bankers Courting Russian Oligarchs, Criminals? British banking has welcomed President Vladimir Putin’s judo partners, Arkady and Boris Rotenberg, via a loophole in its transparency laws, an investigation revealed. English Limited Partnerships (ELPs) allow anyone to launch a company in the U.K., without requiring any identification of the owner. “It’s a scandal that people like the Rotenbergs who have been sanctioned in America for years have still been able to use British corporate structures to bring their money out of Russia … and then spend it at will,” said U.K. lawmaker Margaret Hodge. The investigation also found ELPs were linked to money laundering, terrorism and fraud. (Source: BBC) |

| | You’re In! | US Senate Votes 95-1 for Sweden, Finland NATO Membership The pair have received strong bipartisan support as the defense alliance bolsters against Russian aggression. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has been particularly invested after visiting Sweden and Finland as part of a congressional delegation in May, calling it a “slam-dunk for national security” in the USA. Republican Sen. Josh Hawley is the sole dissenter — he’s long argued the U.S. should focus on China, rather than expanding NATO: “We cannot strengthen our deterrent posture in the Pacific if we’re sending more forces and resources to Europe to defend new allies. That’s the bottom line.” (Sources: The Hill; AP) |

| | Shock | Rep. Jackie Walorski, Staffers Killed in Indiana Car Crash Walorski, 58, was first elected to Congress on the Republican ticket by Indianans in 2012. Staffers Zachery Potts, 27 and Emma Thomson, 28, were killed in the crash, as well as Edith Schmucker, 56. “She passionately brought the voices of her north Indiana constituents to the Congress, and she was admired by colleagues on both sides of the aisle for her personal kindness,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. Pelosi ordered flags in the Capitol to be lowered to half-mast. Fellow Republicans have issued scores of tributes, particularly noting Walorski's work on the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Ethics Committee. (Source: WaPo) |

| | Briefly | Here are some things you should know about today: Roll call. Somalia’s new prime minister, Hamza Barre, has tapped Mukhtar Robow, a former commander of the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab terror group, to lead the anti-terror ministry. Barre says it’s part of an inclusive government — but critics worry Robow may get up to his old tricks. (Source: QZ) Thermostat wars. The Spanish government has banned dropping air conditioners below 27 degrees Celsius, even in households, as it battles a heatwave and stress on the power grids. Two-thirds of Australia's Great Barrier Reef has the most coral coverage in nearly 40 years, but scientists say the bleaching trend must still be monitored closely. (Source: Reuters) |

| INTRIGUING | | Vaporized | Tongan Volcano Eruption Will Change the Climate for Years An unprecedented amount of water was blasted into the atmosphere by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano eruption in January, NASA researchers said. The blast sent roughly 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools' worth of water into the atmosphere — amounting to a 10% increase in water vapor overall. “We've never seen anything like it,” said NASA atmospheric scientist Luis Millán. Vapor typically increases temperatures on earth by trapping heat for a year or two after an eruption. But, scientists warned, the sheer size of the Tongan eruption means we could be feeling the effects for up to a decade. (Sources: NPR, ABC) |

| | Buy the Dip | Texas Crypto Miners Have a New Moneymaker: Power Credits Texas’ energy agency had called on businesses to rein in their energy usage amid summer spikes. Riot Blockchain, which holds several operations across the state, happily complied — and is reaping the benefits. With cryptocurrency crashing, the company picked up a tidy $9.5 million in revenue by selling power credits back to the provider. Incredibly, it made more in the summer selling those credits than it did mining crypto — for which it netted a comparatively paltry $5.6 million. Crypto-mining watchers noted that energy usage has tanked over the summer — an effect of both crippled power grids and diving value. (Source: Gizmodo) |

| | At the Drop of a Bat | ‘Batgirl’ Dropped From Schedule, Stunning Would-Be Fans What happened to Batgirl? The film has been not-so-quietly canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery despite a budget blowout to $90 million and early promotions. Even with its all-star cast — including J.K. Simmons, Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser and Leslie Grace in the bat mask — industry figures say Batgirl isn’t quite big enough for a silver screen push and any marketing could see final costs double. So why shelve it rather than dropping it on HBO Max? Tax, some in the industry speculate. Canning the film entirely would allow Warner Bros. Discovery to recoup its costs by taking a tax write-down. | | | Sweet Surrender | Sweet Ending to Chocolate Disaster in UK Town Ellis Stores in Scunthorpe, England, lost around £1,000 of sweets to last month’s unprecedented heatwave. The store’s air conditioning failed, melting dozens of chocolates into liquid. With sky-high insurance premiums and other costs, owners Stephen and Linda Ellis were “literally ready to pack in, shut the door and just leave it all,” daughter Claire York said. Instead, they turned to crowdfunding. Customers who have frequented the store for over two decades dug deep, giving the family £450 to make up the loss. For the whole week, her mother "just cried every time anybody’s given any money, anybody’s done anything,” York said. (Source: BBC) |

| | Hole in None | It’s On: Golfers Take PGA to Court Over LIV Ban From the green to the courtroom. The bubbling split within the golf world has hit another crescendo with 11 golfers signed on to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf taking on the PGA Tour in an antitrust lawsuit. PGA Tour rules currently say any player — such as Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau or the other nine involved in the case — will be barred from the tour for participating in LIV Golf. Players say that’s overboard. “As part of its carefully orchestrated plan to defeat competition,” the lawsuit says, “the Tour has threatened lifetime bans on players who play in even a single LIV Golf event.” (Source: ESPN) |
