Good morning and thanks for starting your week with us. Here are some of the day's top headlines. Insurance woes: The void left by the insurance companies that failed after Hurricane Ida has largely been filled in two ways: Some of the market has been gobbled up by new firms that resemble the ones that failed. And the rest has mostly gone to Louisiana Citizens, the state-backed insurer of last resort. Sam Karlin has more on why that raises concerns about the health of Louisiana’s insurance marketplace. Cracking down: Recreational marijuana is technically illegal in Louisiana, but people who want to feel a high have a wide array of legal options: hundreds of sellers of consumable THC-infused seltzers, gummies and extracts sprang up all over the state in the past several years. Just as swiftly as consumable hemp has grown into a $33 million industry in Louisiana, so too could it disappear. James Finn has the details on two bills that aim to crack down on THC-infused products. Concealed carry: Did Gov. Jeff Landry and state lawmakers go too far this year in passing a law that allows people to carry concealed firearms without a permit? In a statewide poll conducted for The Times-Picayune | The Advocate, a large majority of Louisiana voters said they don't support the new law. John Simerman has more from the poll. Thanks for reading, and check out all the latest news, sports and entertainment coverage from The Times-Picayune. Kasey |
