Morning Briefing

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2024

In today's newsletter, parents of Michigan’s Oxford High School shooting victims demand attorney general  investigation, the pro women’s hockey game is returning to Detroit and see where a quick snow could hit Michigan this week.

Have you ever tried a turducken?

It's commonplace for green beans, candied sweet potatoes, stuffing and the ultimate star—the turkey— to grace dinner plates during holiday dinners. But one Up North brewery has a twist on the traditional meal.

Stormcloud Brewing Company in Frankfurt has claimed Saturday, Nov. 23, as Michigan Turducken Day for years and 2024 is no different. If you have never heard of a turducken, it's a duck stuffed into a deboned chicken, further stuffed into a deboned turkey. Pre-orders for Stormcloud Brewing's turducken opened this week and will be available for pick up on Saturday.

For those in a giving spirit this holiday season, Muskegon Rescue Mission is collecting 900 frozen turkeys to provide a Thanksgiving meal for families across the region.

Strong storm forming right over Michigan late week, small area of wet snow possible

Week ahead: A storm system dropping southeast from Canada will reach its strongest over Michigan and the Northeast this week. There could even be a small pocket of colder air aloft to produce a quick snow in the far south-central or southeast part of Lower Michigan. Widespread and vigorous rain showers can be expected on Wednesday into Thursday. All of Michigan will turn windy Thursday with 40 mph gusts for at least a six-hour period.

The current Lake Michigan surface water temperature is 6.3 degrees warmer than normal. This extremely large area of warm water could have two big impacts on Lower Michigan’s weather over the next month or two.

Lake Superior is much warmer than normal for mid-November, coming in at the second warmest on record. The large lake will act as a buffer from bitterly cold air, if that air decides to blow south from Canada. If Lake Superior holds onto the warm water and we eventually get a big cold snap, watch for very heavy lake-effect snow.

Too many beavers harm Michigan’s trout streams, conservationists warn

Trouble in the waters: State wildlife and fisheries managers recently heard from multiple trout fishery advocates raising concerns about what they argue is an overabundance of beavers living in Michigan’s wilderness. The trouble is that trout species require cold, swiftly moving waters to thrive, but too many beaver dams in a stream may slow the water and raise its temperatures, driving the trout away.

Hazard control: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has awarded more than $7 million in grant funding to seven communities across the state to help protect families from lead exposure.

Assistance needed: New legislation could more than double the amount of money available to help with gas and electric bills, as well as make the funding available to more than 300,000 additional low-income households.

Parents of Michigan’s Oxford High School shooting victims demand AG investigation

Nearly three years after the Nov. 30, 2021, Oxford High School shooting in Michigan, parents of victims are demanding a new investigation by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Although Nessel said the Oxford Community Schools Board of Education, Sheriff Michael Bouchard and Prosecutor Karen McDonald previously rejected her office’s offers to conduct an investigation, although she is still willing to conduct one.

The parents and other stakeholders believe a comprehensive investigation conducted by the AG’s Office could help to head off future school shootings and increase the accountability of school districts and their administrators across Michigan—and possibly the nation.

Having the conversation: A surge in violent threats have forced Michigan schools to close or lockdown this fall. Experts say the numbers are on the rise across the country, and both student and parent anxieties may also be high. Here are expert recommendations on how to talk to your kids about school safety threats.
