Mandla Shabangu is an unusual 21-year-old. Earlier this year, instead of organising a lavish 21st birthday party for himself, he got together with three friends to donate blankets and food to an orphanage in Daggakraal, one of South Africa’s most impoverished and isolated communities. From this selfless act, the #Being21 initiative was born. As a graduate of the Columba Leadership programme, Shabangu was inspired by the idea of service as a fundamental value. “After the Columba academy, I decided to commit myself to being of service for the rest of my life,” says Shabangu. “So, when I approached my 21stbirthday I thought why not do something to make someone else happy, instead of getting tangible gifts?” he continues. Shabangu originally planned to use the initiative for his own birthday and then to close it down, but several sponsors, including Nedbank and Nestle, urged him to register #Being21 as a non-profit organisation and to continue the good work. ...[read more] BLSA Statement on the Anniversary of the Public Protector’s report on State Capture On the anniversary of the publication of the Public Protector of South Africa’s report on state capture, Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) repeated its call for a judicial commission of inquiry into state capture and made the following statement: A year ago, the Public Protector published her report detailing how far our country and government had been subsumed by the twin cancers of corruption and state capture. The scholarship was established to allow economically disadvantaged young women of strong character to achieve their potential through higher education. The scholarship will cover all the costs of Keabetswe’s studies at The University of Free State (UFS) including tuition and fees, accommodation, food, textbooks and a laptop. “Keabetswe is the epitome of the values of the Columba Leadership programme.
