My apologies, I was away for most of July with no signal, so I will combine the months of July and August to focus on positive developments. As is to be expected the months of July and August were gloomy and overwhelming: Eskom on the brink; failing municipalities; expropriation without compensation; endless corruption cases; the Zondo Commission of Inquiry; broken bridges in JHB; Trump tweets; Racist videos from Adam Catzavelos; and we lost against Argentina! But I have been struggling with what a dear friend and colleague calls “the black dog” of depression. For those of you who suffer from depression, you will know that it is damn nigh impossible to create from within the bowels of the beast. ...[read more] De Beers Venetia Mine offers adult matric qualifications to local communities From left to right: Brighton Mamadi , Millicent Makhura , Matome Malobela , Joel Saku , Rarane Masekela , Hendric Kgalushi and Caroline Matsa LIMPOPO — De Beers, the world’s leading diamond company, in partnership with adult education specialists Media Works, has enrolled 14 members from the local communities surrounding its Venetia Mine in Musina, Limpopo in an Adult Senior Certificate (ASC) programme. The training is targeted at community members from the local labour sending areas who either failed Grade 12 or wish to improve their grades. The minimum requirement for the programme is a Grade 11 pass. Over a period of five years, the programme will have an annual intake of local adults requiring ASC support, with specialised training provided by Media Works’ Matric Works programme.
