APRIL IS BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Bowel cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) is one of the most common cancers in Ireland, with over 2,500 people diagnosed each year. Early detection is key.
🔎 Know the symptoms: 🧻 Changes in bowel habits 🩸 Blood in your poo 🥺 Pain or a lump in your tummy 🚽 Often feeling like you need to poo 📉 Unexplained weight loss 🥱 Unexplained tiredness
These symptoms can be caused by other conditions but it is important to get checked by your G.P. if you are experiencing them for 3 weeks or more. Screening saves lives: If you’re aged 59 - 70, you can avail of BowelScreen, a free home test that aims to detect signs of bowel cancer at an early stage, where there are no symptoms.

🧬 RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT 🧬
Nial O'Reilly, one of our researchers, is based in the Lambe Institute for Translational Research, University Hospital Galway. Nial's research is focussed on colorectal cancer and immunotherapy.
Immunotherapy is a revolutionary cancer treatment which uses the body's own immune system to treat the disease. However, immunotherapy still does not work on colorectal cancer – one of the most common types of cancer in Ireland.
Through his research, Nial is working to change that. Building on research previously carried out by Dr. Aideen Ryan and her team, Nial will examine how colorectal cancer cells communicate with one another to resist immunotherapies and attempt to manipulate them allowing immunotherapies to take effect. Nial explains here It's only with support like yours that we are able to fund Nial's vital research - thank you.
🤔 IS A 'BASE TAN' A GOOD IDEA? 🤔
Have you ever thought about using a sunbed for a base tan before you go on holidays?
It might seem like a simple choice, but sunbeds produce UV radiation, which causes premature skin ageing and increases our risk of skin cancer. Watch the video above where Prof. Ann-Marie Tobin explains.
Being SunSmart means protecting your skin – now and in the future. Skip the sunbeds and enjoy the sun safely.
