| Featured Item: St. Kateri Tekakwitha - Statue Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks", Kateri Tekakwitha was born in upstate New York in 1656. Her father was a Mohawk chief and her mother was an Algonquin who was raised Catholic. Kateri was orphaned at age 4 by a smallpox epidemic that left her with poor eyesight and a badly scarred face. She led a life of prayer and penitential practices. She taught the young and helped those in the village who were poor or sick. In 1679 Kateri made a vow of perpetual virginity and consecrated her life to Jesus. She died at the age of 24 and was canonized on October 21, 2012.
