In April 1969 Stefan Moses met Peggy Guggenheim for the first time. Together with the author Uli Weyland, he visited her in Venice at her private residence, the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal. A second visit, this time with the journalist and returned emigrant Franz Spelman, took place in November 1974. Examples of Moses’ series of photographs arising from these two encounters were published in ZEIT-Magazin in 1971 and in the German daily Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger in 1974. As a whole they will be exhibited now for the first time. |

With his two series, Moses created in two stages not only the most comprehensive but also perhaps the only existing photographic narrative concerning Peggy Guggenheim, beyond the numerous individual pictures taken by others. In Moses’ images, which never stylize, beautify or exaggerate, you see and feel an inner self-encounter – a dialogue between the photographer and the subject at eye level. It is not private views, receptions, studio sessions or other official occasions that are the focus but simply a poise that conveys proximity – a sense of normality within the extraordinary that is above all posturing. |

In Encounters with Peggy Guggenheim, renowned photographer Stefan Moses reveals his collection of photographs of Peggy, taken between 1969 and 1974, many of which have never been seen before. Striking, eccentric and dramatic, Moses photographed Peggy in her favourite places around Venice, as well as in her private palazzo at Canal Grande. See Peggy as she glides on her gondola with her Lhasa apso dogs or wears her iconic butterfly glasses made by Edward Melcarth -- the quickness and talent of Moses captures the character of this true eccentric. An inspiration for art-, photography- and fashion-lovers alike, Encounters with Peggy Guggenheim is a behind-the-scenes look at of one of the world's most eccentric and inspirational women. |
