The Wake Up

TUESDAY, OCT. 24, 2023

Stinkbugs were accidentally introduced to the United States in the mid-1990s, possibly as stowaways on container ships from Asia. Now, the insects – officially brown marmorated stinkbugs – are here to stay, crawling through cracks in your home looking for shelter and ruining fruit and vegetable crops.

Invasive species like stinkbugs are more than annoying. A report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services estimates that the cost of “biological invasions” worldwide in 2019 was more than $423 billion.

Take phragmites, the spikey reed found along highway ditches and other drainage areas, which take over emergent wetlands and displace native plants such as Canada bluejoint grass and great bur-reed. Or the round goby, which feasts on the eggs of smallmouth bass and competes for food with other native fish, such as sculpins and other minnows.

We can never get rid of this unwanted nature. The best we can do is try to manage it.
