Stocks grind higher as GM hits record, oil rises to $53 level

U.S. stocks posted modest gains as the Nasdaq recovered some losses. However, stronger standouts included General Motors, which posted its first record close since October 2017, and oil, which notched its sixth straight session of gains topping $53 per barrel.
