Hunterby Mercedes Lackey

I picked this because I thought the cover looked really cool. I was glad that I had. Although this book is better suited for the Young Adult collection, I found that it didn't suffer from the usual weak-minded, weepy heroine that I usually find in this kind of book. Instead, I found a main character who doesn't shy away from the hard decisions and waits until she is alone in her room to cry her eyes out. The magic shown in this world is unique and paints a lovely picture in my mind. I hope to find the sequel, The Elite, soon.

The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

Ceony has just graduated from Praff School for the Magically Inclined. Instead of being able to choose the materials she bonds to (she desperately wants to bespell metal!), she is assigned to paper. Paper! Useless and boring paper! But when her instructor is attacked, she takes matters into her own hands. Towards the end, the book slowed down in spots, but that didn't detract from the overall appeal of the book. The next two books in the trilogy are even better! Recommended.
