Today, I have a little challenge for you all: Do something that makes you uncomfortable. I'll give you some examples.
Good morning, friends. I hope your Sunday's going great so far. Today, I have a little challenge for you all. It came to me when reading a recent blog post from Tim Ferriss: "Comfort Challenge #1: Learn to Eye Gaze." In it, he asks readers to try holding eye contact with total strangers as they walk down the street or with conversational partners. This is uncomfortable for most of us, which is the entire point of the exercise: doing something that we otherwise wouldn't just to experience and hopefully get acclimated to the feel of skating in the discomfort zone. Eye gazing is a good one. What are some other challenges you could do? Next time you're in an elevator, stand in front and face the back. Throw in some eye gazing while you're at it, if you feel motivated. Sit outside in the cold for 10 minutes. Just go outside in light clothing, find somewhere to sit, and just be there. Breathe exclusively through your nose through an entire workout. Walk barefoot over gravel. Stand up for yourself in explicit terms. Many people have trouble truly standing up for themselves explicitly and forthrightly. This next week, try standing up for yourself, even (or especially) if it means calling someone out directly. Don't fill empty time with phone time. Standing in line? Just stand. Don't pull out the phone. At the DMV? Just wait, no phone. Fast during meals out with others. Don't do this too much. There's something special and deeply human about dining with others. But it is uncomfortable to sit with a big dinner party and not eat anything. Try it. Pick just one of those to try today or later this week. Then write back in the comment section of WLL and let me know how it went. And if you have any other discomfort exercises, mention those, too. Take care, everyone. |
