My Why
Hey everyone. Happy Sunday. It's beautiful where I am. How about where you are? Someone recently asked me why I write. After all, I sold the Primal Kitchen business, I've got my wife, got my kids, got a great life in Miami. I could just sit back and play Ultimate and paddle and spoil my granddaughter for the rest of my days. Why keep up with work? Why still lead Primal Kitchen? Why still write? Don't get me wrong: I'm doing all that too. Always. But it's true that I am still working, writing, and building the business. Why? Well, I'm not my only concern. My day-to-day happiness, contentment, and experiences are not the only things that matter to me. I don't just want to live awesome. I want you to live awesome. It's a rare thing when a person gets the chance to help large swathes of the population improve their health. Most times people who try to "change the world" end up getting nothing done. They'd be better off (and the small social circle that surrounds them would be better off) focusing on the small stuff, on improving their own situation and touching those closest to them. They waste all that mental energy thinking about the millions of people out there who they'll never know, never meet, never affect and their personal life suffers. Most people don't have the reach necessary to change the world. That's not a bad thing. And many people who do have the reach have no business changing the world—see most politicians. But I'm lucky enough to have that reach. And my reach seems to have had a good effect. I'm not talking about anything revolutionary here. I'm not trying to change people's way of life or butt into their homes or schools or heads. I'm just providing sound health, fitness, and food advice and giving you convenient food that isn't doused in soybean oil. That's wholly a public good. So that's why I still write and work even though I don't "have" to. Because I actually do have to. Why do you do what you do? Consider this an incredibly open ended question. Think about what you do—anything at all—and tell me why you do it in the comment section of Weekly Link Love. Thanks everyone, and have a great rest of your day. |
