Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Andrea Mitchell

Our Tuesday may be Super, but our Winner is a Wonder. And like other on-screen heroes, this one has an origin story worth reading.

NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell, who anchors her namesake show each day at noon on MSNBC, is going to have a long day covering the primary races across the country today.  And not for the first time. Or even the third, fifth or tenth.

It's Mitchell's 13th time covering  a presidential election. Thirteen elections, seven administrations, countless scandals, policy fights, tragedies... the gamut.

And the background to her four decades with NBC is as interesting as the news she covers. She wrote about it for Glamour in an article that published on Tuesday, both for the big election day and in honor of International Women’s Day, coming up this Sunday, March 8. It's not a simple reminiscence but a reflection on the world as it was when she began, what it is today, and what it can be in the future.

Mitchell will be bringing that hard-earned perspective and historic context to her coverage on MSNBC Tuesday, along with co-anchors Chuck Todd, Lester Holt, and Savannah Guthrie.

For the staggering statistic of covering her thirteenth presidential election alone she'd have the Win for today. The fact that she had so much more to say ahead of Women's Day is just icing on the cake.
MEDIA LOSER:
Brit Hume

Fox News Channel senior political analyst Brit Hume gets the nod for Media Loser today for a gaffe that was embarrassing on multiple levels.

Hume was tweeting at a very early hour on Tuesday, and shared a screenshot of his browser, with an election betting site in the tab, to comment on the odds in the Democratic primary races today.

Unfortunately, the un-cropped image contained all of his browser tabs, including one of the.. less-than family-friendly variety

The tweet was deleted eventually, of course, but not before the longtime Fox anchor and current pundit, himself an already rather active presence on Twitter, had been a big time topic on social media, not to mention blogs and news site.

In fact, his name was a trending topic on Twitter. Along with "Sexy Vixen Vinyl" of course.

It is all the more awkwardly embarrass for the clumsiness of the error. The sort one is more likely to commit if one is of a certain age.

All those aspects and more were the material for a host of tweets, including from fellow blue checks, mocking the moment. The fare ranged from friendly ribbing to angry jabbing to political angles and more, as Twitter does.

But there's no way to split the difference on the fail. It was unseemly and awkward, very much in public, and a definite losing moment.

The A-Block

Endorsement Eve

Before Super Tuesday, you have madhouse Monday, when getting the biggest, best news, or the best big news, is the alliterative name of the game.

The dual endorsements of the formerly dueling Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg at a rally on Monday night was a big story on Monday for Joe Biden. They each delivered, in separate remarks.

"We need a politics that's about decency," said Mayor Pete. “We need to unite our party and our country," said Sen. Klobuchar.

And they were joined by also-ran Beto O'Rourke. Neat!

Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders' big news endorsement play ahead of Super Tuesday was ... different.

Also Bloomberg

Also Mike Bloomberg made some news. And a mess.

Such language!

Appearing on Good Morning America to promote her new documentary series, 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton took a shot at Bernie Sanders again, said she still considers Bernie's campaign to be "just baloney."

On Fox News, contributor and former Democratic National Committee chairwoman Donna Brazile answered a question from Ed Henry about the potential for a brokered Democratic nominating convention with quite a response, directed at commentary from RNC chair Ronna McDaniel

"Ronna, go to hell," said Brazile.

Bits and Pieces

The Trump campaign is suing the Washington Post over op-eds. Not to mention their lawsuit against the New York Times, which Dan Abrams called a "fake" suit today on The View.

This comic convention will go on despite coronavirus concerns. Trump had a "very good talk" with the Taliban, apparently, which who knew that was a thing one could have. And James Comey dropped an endorsement for Biden, which a Biden spox promptly called for maintenance to pick back up.

Must-See Clip of the Day

Steve Kornacki

When Chris Matthews abruptly announced his retirement, effectively immediately, it was big news. But another part of the story captured Twitter's eye: the reaction from a stunned Steve Kornacki.

Kornacki has been almost as mentioned as Matthews online on Tuesday, for his potential as a replacement, for the sheer moment of initial shock as he realized the task ahead of him, and for the emotional words delivered at the end of that hour hosting.

Both clips really are quite something to see.
