But although runners are apart this year, together, they can make a difference for causes close to their heart like CANSA. Sanlam is the proud sponsor of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, and this year, using cutting-edge technology, Sanlam is giving their global running family the opportunity to enjoy a virtual race experience, no matter where they are in the world. Runners will be able to choose the route they wish to run virtually, namely a 5km, 10km, 21.1km or 42.2km Cape Town route, with the virtual marathon app tracking them in their specific time zone. CANSA is one hundred percent on board with staff and ambassadors taking part in the virtual event and we are calling on you to support them by making a donation on their GivenGain activist pages. Your donation enables CANSA to provide care and support services to cancer patients and loved ones, so we need you to hop on board and make our participation count. CANSA Staff have come together to #RunForSomething #RunForCANSA and to raise awareness and much needed funds for CANSA at the Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon 2020. Each CANSA Crew will have a Team Captain and their challenge is to encourage other staff members to become part of their CANSA Crew and take part in the Cape Town Virtual Marathon on 18 October 2020. They are also inviting members of the public to become CANSA Active Ambassadors and their teams can include athletes from local running clubs, friends and family. Salisha Lauton shares her motivation for supporting CANSA: "The role of a mother is only fully appreciated when you walk in her shoes. Until then, her sleepless nights, strife's to provide when resources are few, and reasons for firm discipline are unprecedented. My gran, now 82 years of age, may not have had all the luxuries in life, yet she has nurtured 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She taught us to be humble, respectful and to work tirelessly to achieve our goals. Despite the challenges she experienced in her early years, which included loosing her belongings several times during floods which often swept through her hometown, becoming a widow at the age of 56, taking care of her youngest daughter when she was diagnosed with cancer and the passing of her eldest son 12 years ago; she fought fiercely through a triple bypass, breast cancer and COVID-19 most recently. Her will to live in the face of all adversities to continue to support her family is incredible! She’s a stalwart of note and an inspiration to us. This year, I will be running the Cape Town marathon (42.2km), on 18 October, in honor of my gran, Kasturi (Nela) Singh Narrandes. I urge you to make a contribution towards my goal of R2 500 for CANSA so that you can be part of changing lives meaningfully and together we can venerate a woman of strength."
