Each year’s Festival kicks off with our two-day Kidquake assemblies and workshops, which ignite a lifelong love of reading and writing in thousands of Bay Area public school students.
DearJohn, Over the last 18 years, Kidquake has brought thousands of young readers, mostly low income students of color, into close contact with authors of color. Inspiring people to embrace reading and writing is what we do.
Help us lay the foundation for strong, positive relationships with reading and storytelling today.
As 5th grade teacher Ms. Saidawi found out, students thrive after Kidquake: “When we returned to school that day, students raced to discover which books we received…I had to create a ‘reading order’ that nearly all 27 of my students’ names were on. Students were even reading at recess and asked for more time to read during the school day!” Something even more special can happen when a student comes to Kidquake. She meets authors that look like she does and, right then, she starts to think of herself in a new way. As another Kidquake teacher put it, “It was great for my students of color to see and be inspired by authors of color! One of my students was so excited to share her last name with [author] Minnie Phan!” As a supporter, we know you know the feeling. Give that gift to a child—donate today!
For the love of words. Thank you! Team Kidquake
PS. The last few years we’ve made efforts to expand access to Kidquake—we’re reaching close to 4,000 students now. Beyond our two-days of assemblies and workshops, we want to include more school visits by authors year round as part of Kidquake. Together, let’s bring Kidquake to more schools around the Bay.
