JEWISH • INDEPENDENT • NONPROFIT Reader —
My father, Dr. Mordkhe Schaechter, was a Yiddish linguist and teacher who loved the language and its heritage. He believed in immersive teaching—and when he taught a class, he’d ask his students to share (in Yiddish, of course!) “the news of the day.” Yiddish shaped Jewish life on the Lower East Side when the Forward first started in 1897, and for nearly 100 years, we published exclusively in Yiddish. Now, 125 years after our first issue, we’re still publishing Yiddish news every day. This intergenerational undertaking is a source of familiarity for longtime readers, speakers, and listeners—and a pathway to learning for new ones.
