Surfer sets world record riding 73.5-foot wave, that's more than 5 stories

This week in Coast Lines: A Guinness World Record wave also won surfer Maya Gabeira the World Surf League’s XXL Big Wave Award.

Plus, a beach cleanup program is helping veterans find work, and a whale shark, the largest of the sharks, was photographed off Dana Point
.

Here’s what’s happening along the Southern California coast.
73.5-foot wave was largest ridden for the year

Most years, surfers gather in Southern California to celebrate the year in shredding, but this year the World Surf League had to announce its slew of awards online, including the XXL Big Wave Award to Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira.

She rode a 73.5-foot monster, setting a Guinness World Record at the same time. You gotta check out the video of her ride.

Other big wave and performance awards were also given.

Veterans are finding new purpose through beach cleanups 

Fresh off of service with the Marine Corps, two friends have created a program that is getting other veterans and those who might hire them out to beaches for cleanup days.

“When they’re together cleaning the beach, they meet each other on a whole different level,” said Kyle Hansen, who helped found Recycle for Veterans.

While helping the environment, Recycle for Veterans is also helping make connections that can lead to successful futures for veterans after their military service

Whale shark is a rare sight for local waters

Swimming in a kelp patty 30 miles off Dana Point, a spear fisherman saw a 15-foot shark swimming below and high-tailed it to his boat.

But then the curious whale shark – their name is a perfect description, they are a whale of a shark – came by the boat to take a closer look.

The visit is something special – and completely safe an expert said – but also a curiosity because a shark like that isn't supposed to be hanging out around here.

Remember when?

Within years of the 1909 Port of Los Angeles opening, it was realized a key feature was missing: juice. Juice to power the torches welding together giant ships, juice to power the machines processing tons and tons of fish. But it was still years before enough steam built to generate electricity at the port.
