My son, Kiaha, and I were talking about our trip to Hawaii and how much time he’d be able to spend there. He explained that he got two weeks of paid vacation and planned to use most of that on this trip. “Nice,” I said and then continued without thinking. “I have unlimited paid time off so that helps.” He just stared. “Well, excuuuuuse me,” he finally said, sarcastically, making a face. “Must be nice!” I just laughed and changed the subject. Unlimited paid time off can be successful provided your organization’s culture supports it, as we see in our top story today. Future PLC, SmartBrief’s parent company, does this. It offers unlimited paid time off and management -- including our CEO Zillah Byng-Thorne -- encourages us to take the time we need to tend to our families and personal priorities. My manager, Megan, has made a point of reminding us directors to schedule time off each quarter. Are you offering unlimited paid time off? How are you nurturing it in your culture? Do employees use the time? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
