Shooting left one student dead, another gravely wounded
Good morning, Scott Jensen topped the Republican field for governor at precinct caucuses Tuesday night, and the physician and former state senator also leads his party’s money chase. Jensen, who has based his campaign on opposition to COVID-19 lockdowns and vaccine mandates, won by a commanding margin among six Republicans listed on caucus ballots – taking 38 percent. More from MPR News' politics editor Mike Mulcahy in this morning's Capitol View newsletter. Our arctic air lingers a couple more days. Highs today hover a few degrees either side of the zero mark across Minnesota. Sunny skies today, and dangerous windchills tonight as low as minus 45 northwest. Find the latest on Updraft. | |

| Walz way ahead of his GOP rivals in the election 2022 funding battle | Other DFL candidates? Not so much. New data released Tuesday by the state Campaign Finance Board tracks fundraising by candidates, parties and outside groups in Minnesota for 2021. As of Dec. 31, Walz had $3.6 million in his campaign account as he seeks a second term as Minnesota’s governor. That’s more than twice as much as all his would-be Republican opponents combined. In the meantime, incumbent Attorney General Keith Ellison is in a much tighter financial race. Ellison’s nearest GOP rival, Dennis Smith, has nearly as much money as he does, and the declared Republican candidates together have combined to outraise Ellison. | |

| Pfizer COVID vaccine may soon get a greenlight for emergency use on under-5 children. The drugmaker applied for the federal authorization Tuesday, potentially opening the way for the very youngest Americans to start receiving shots as early as March. Pfizer shots containing just one-tenth of the adult dose could be dispensed to kids in that age group. But what about now? Is there any other way to protect my under-5 kid? That and more questions, answered by a doctor . Dr. Melanie Swift, with Mayo Clinic, took audience questions on how to protect those younger children, whether masking is still worth continuing and how robust is natural immunity after an infection. It's Groundhog Day 2022, and we have some sad news. Milltown Mel, a groundhog who has for years offered his weather predictions on Groundhog Day, has died . Mel "recently crossed over the rainbow bridge," his handlers say, and their scramble for a replacement rodent before Feb. 2 was fruitless. | |
