Good morning, and welcome to the August 5 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. You may have heard there was some news Friday. A quick programming note: We're going to try to take a crack at answering some of your most pressing questions about the team. Read through to the bottom of this newsletter for how to send those questions in, and you might see the answer in the next newsletter (and potentially in the print edition of the Times-Picayune) Suspended realityTwo long-awaited developments took place Friday: Alvin Kamara fully and candidly addressed the events that took place outside of a Las Vegas nightclub in February 2022, and the NFL finally let him know how he’d be suspended for his actions. Kamara wasn't even on the initial list of Saints players who were supposed to address the media Friday, but shortly after head coach Dennis Allen wrapped up, the Saints running back strode up to the podium and opened up. He had some things to get off his chest. First, let's say this about Kamara's comments: He was candid, contrite and clearly remorseful about his actions. For anyone who has ever encountered Kamara personally, hearing about him being arrested in Las Vegas for his role in a brawl last spring felt so wildly out of character. What didn't feel out of character was Kamara standing in front of cameras and owning up to what he did. He acknowledged that it didn't make it right, but he wasn't going to try to minimize his actions. Kudos to Kamara for that. Second: A three-game suspension feels like something the Saints can handle. Remember last year, before the felony charges were dropped, when people were throwing out six or eight game numbers? The best thing about Friday, for both Kamara and the Saints, is that they can finally take their first real steps in the process of putting this entire thing behind them. Saint 4 LyfeSomething rare is happening here in New Orleans: An NFL franchise took a step to ensure one of its greatest players ever doesn't ever have to wear another team's colors. Cam Jordan signed an extension that will, in all likelihood, allow him to finish his career in a Saints uniform. With his family present, Jordan spoke about what this meant to him before Friday's practice. Columnist Rod Walker says the Saints did the right thing, and I agree. This Saints Insider's take: There may be some people out there who think this is a bad business bet on a player who is 34 years old, and maybe there's an element of truth to that. But nobody embodies the Saints culture better than Cam Jordan, who has been nothing short of magnificent on and off the field, and in this modern age of cutthroat business decisions in professional sports, it felt nice to see a player like Jordan get rewarded for his long contributions to the franchise and his adopted city.
