Kaya (hello), welcome to the Nyungar season of Makuru (June and July). It's a time of first rains, increased fertility, and beautiful blue and purple flowers like the Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta) and Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis). Keep an eye out for paired Wardong (Ravens) in the sky as nature embraces this cold and rainy season.

Winter Waste Workshops Each year, nearly 27 million toys thrown away by Australians end up in landfill. To help reduce this problem the City held its first Toy Swap event in partnership with the Cockburn Toy Library. It was a huge success with many toys finding new homes throughout Cockburn making a positive impact on waste reduction.

Fisheries Minister Don Punch has moved to ban shark fishing at metropolitan beaches. - The ban would apply from the City of Joondalup through to Mandurah and at various locations along the Swan River in the metropolitan area. The Minister said he was also working with the City of Cockburn to bring in new shark-fishing beach laws.
Perth councils are being encouraged to divert waste from landfill, with the State Government to increase the waste levy from July next year. - Western Australia's waste levy rate will be $85 per tonne from 1 July 2024. It is the first increase to the levy since 2018 with a catch-up rise in line with inflation.
Diverse fauna recorded in Bibra Lake and Yaakan Park surveys - The results confirm management efforts by the City in partnership with community stakeholders is paying off.
