Birak brings the heat and the orange blossoms!
| | | Birak brings the heat and the orange blossoms! Birak (December and January), the Nyungar season of the young or the first summer, unfolds with vibrant orange blossoms of the Moodjar (WA Christmas Tree) in full bloom. The season brings hot and dry weather, with easterly winds in the day and soothing south-west sea breezes in the afternoon. Young animals experience growth, marked by the transformation of baby Kooboolong (frogs) into adulthood and reptiles shedding their old skins. As rains ease and warm weather prevails, traditional burning practices defined this time for the Nyungar people, ensuring fuel reduction, enhancing grazing pastures, and facilitating mobility. | | | Don't let sustainability go in the bin this Christmas Try these tips for a sustainable and waste-free holiday, helping you save money and reduce stress: Use reusable fabric, recycled paper, or nature-inspired decorations instead of single-use wrappings. Give the gift of memories - plan a day out or a fun activity together. Support local artisans and businesses that prioritise sustainability. Minimise food waste by planning meals and creatively using leftovers. Choose biodegradable decorations like pinecones and dried fruit instead of plastic. Let’s make this festive season greener together! Plus, don't forget to check the City's website for your bin schedule for the Christmas and New Year’s break. | Find out more |
