| | | It's warming up - it must be Kambarang! As we enter Kambarang (October and November), the Nyungar second spring, we start to see warmer days and longer dry spells. The season ushers in movement, awakening creatures like the Nornt (Western Tiger Snake) and witnessing fledgling birds taking their first flights into independence, while Koolbardis (Magpies) intensify their protective instincts over nests and chicks. The landscape becomes a canvas of vibrant hues, with persistent yellows of Acacias, blossoming Banksias, delicate Kangaroo Paw and Orchids, and the emerging Balgas, especially those rejuvenated by fire or close pruning. | | | Spring is here: Watch for active wildlife! As temperatures rise this spring, many animals including snakes, turtles and magpies become more active. Snakes Snakes come out to bask in the sun and search for food. Stay vigilant by following safety tips to avoid encounters. Always exercise your dog on a leash, stick to designated paths, trails and walkways. If you encounter a snake, stay calm, slowly back away to a safe distance, and allow the snake to move away on its own. Turtles As turtle nesting season begins, females may travel long distances in search of suitable sites. If you see a turtle, guide it in the direction it’s heading. For injured or dead turtles, visit the WA Wildlife Hospital. Keep an eye out for Turtle Trackers at local wetlands and record any sightings on the TurtleSAT app. Birds Magpies may swoop to protect their nests. To reduce the risk, stay 100m away from nesting areas, don’t provoke the birds, and use an object to shield your face if swooped. If you see a baby bird, remember many are just learning to fly and may not need help. Use the WA Wildlife flowchart for guidance and contact them if you’re unsure. Enjoy the vibrant season and stay safe around our active wildlife! | Find out more |
