Apple halts AI iPhone news alerts following BBC complaint

The issue highlights the challenges of implementing AI in sensitive areas like news reporting

Apple has suspended its AI-powered notification system for news apps after it was found to be making errors in summarizing news reports.

The Apple Intelligence feature — introduced in iOS 18.1 — is meant to help users manage notification overload by grouping alerts and displaying only the essential details, but it sometimes made alarming errors. For example, a BBC-branded alert generated by Apple's AI falsely said that Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had killed himself. "We are working on improvements and will make them available in a future software update," an Apple spokesperson said on Thursday ...

A $200 phone has the solution to all of our handset battery woes

Phone battery life is pretty good these days, however, most handsets still need charging after a day or two. But not this one

TCL’s new 60XE Nxtpaper 5G phone features last year’s Nxtpaper 3.0 technology and a dedicated Nxtpaper key to make it easy to switch between modes. After taking a brief look at it at the recent CES tech show, Digital Trends’ Nirave Gondhia is convinced that the solution to handset battery life problems lies in this technology.

TCL’s new phone brings its Nxtpaper technology — which we’ve previously seen on the company’s tablets — to North America for the first time. If you use it exclusively in Nxtpaper mode, the battery can last for up to a week — way more than any other smartphone, and that's great news when you consider that all of its features function perfectly well in this mode ...

Has 1More cracked the code on affordable Wi-Fi headphones?

Wi-Fi headphones offer better range, faster data transfer, and higher sound quality compared to Bluetooth

1More’s new headphones look like a mashup of Sony’s WH-1000XM5 and Apple’s AirPods Max, according to Digital Trends. But the most interesting part is that they’re 1More’s first Wi-Fi headphones, and they could be the first Wi-Fi headphones that are priced affordably for most people.

Their official name is 1More SonoFlow Max Over-Ear Headphones HQ70. 1More expects them to be available by the end of September 2025. We don’t know how much they’ll cost, but given 1More’s reputation for delivering high quality audio at ultra-low prices, they could come in at under $300 ...

Visionary director David Lynch dies at 78

Lynch was truly a one-of-a-kind filmmaker

The pioneering American filmmaker David Lynch has died, his family announced in a Facebook post on Thursday. The visionary director revolutionized cinema with his surrealist style, creating iconic movies like Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive.

Known for his dreamlike, often disturbing visual narratives, the acclaimed director also created the groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks. Lynch received three Academy Award nominations for best director and won numerous prestigious awards, including the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement.  "Lynch, in his fearless way, reinvented movies, letting the homegrown avant-garde rapture of his brain flower into an aesthetic that turned the tropes of Hollywood inside out," Variety said ...

The Nintendo Switch 2 gets its official reveal, but no release date

After eight years, the Japanese gaming company has finally unveiled a successor to the Switch handheld

Following seemingly endless leaks and rumors, Nintendo officially revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday. It comes with a larger screen, and like its predecessor, the handheld can be hooked up to a TV via a new dock with rounded edges. It also features a redesigned kickstand for tabletop play.

It also comes with detachable Joy-con controllers that have the same basic button layout and design. The main difference is that they attach to the central display via magnetic rails that can be easily popped off with release buttons near each Joy-con's triggers.
