Get ready for a rate hike today

Ahead of an expected rate hike of 75 basis points today, the rand spent yesterday at its best levels against the dollar since the end of August. It broke below the R17.10 handle late afternoon, with emerging market currencies across the board trading stronger. Another argument is that punters might be expecting more than a 75 basis points hike after inflation came out higher than expected.

Brent Crude lost 3% to trade at $85 per barrel and metals had a mixed day. Copper fell below $8,000 as recession bells were ringing in the market.
