The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Jennifer Wadsworth | Assistant metro editor

Good morning. Hopefully your Thursday's off to a good start. Here's a rundown of our top stories today.

Teacher protest

Despite the teachers' union calling for a mass sick-out to protest the East Baton Rouge K-12 district's response to the latest COVID surge, disruption was minimal Wednesday. Charles Lussier has the story.

Dumpster death

A man was crushed to death by a trash compactor after officials say he tried to escape freezing overnight temps by sleeping in a dumpster. He was identified at 42-year-old Hammond resident Jermaine Watts. Here's what we know about what happened.

Interim appointee

Local businessman Darryl Hurst will fill the D5 seat on the East Baton Rouge Metro Council — at least until voters decide who should serve what's left of Erika Green's term now that she's gone on to assume her seat on the family court bench. Paul Cobler covered the vote Wednesday for Hurst's appointment. Here's his story.
