A week that started in difficulty as we lost our sprinter Michael Matthews to a positive COVID-19 result, ended on a high as the team put in a stellar performance to bring Wilco Kelderman and Jai Hindley into a prime position to climb the overall standings. Continuing on from where we left off after the opening week of racing, the team have gone from strength-to-strength as the second week of action unfolded at the Giro d'Italia. Choosing where they spend their reserves wisely, it was full focus on the key GC stages this week, with all energy going into Saturday’s TT and Sunday’s mega day in the mountains. After a good TT performance from Wilco Kelderman and Jai Hindley, both still occupied the top ten on GC heading into stage 15. Executing their plan to perfection, the team rode on the front all day, taking up the chase from far out to set up a GC battle on Piancavallo. A vision of beauty and unreal bike racing, the team peeled off one-by-one, leaving Hindley on the front with only Kelderman and Tao Geoghegan Hart in his wheel. Continuing on from where the team left off, Hindley rode selflessly all the way to the line before the duo finished second and third on the stage, gaining crucial time on their GC rivals. The stage performance was mirrored in the overall standings with the Team Sunweb duo occupying the GC podium as we head into the final week of racing. We're excited to see what that brings! |
