Good morning. Today is a new day following the devastating attack by a Texas man that authorities say drove a rented truck through a crowd of Bourbon Street revelers early Wednesday morning, leaving 15 dead and dozens injured. The man, who authorities said had an Islamic State flag on the truck, got out of the vehicle and fired a rifle before he was shot and killed by police. The FBI is investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, and has been searching for accomplices. Earlier it had swept neighborhoods for explosive devices after finding one in the truck. Don't miss our team's in-depth reporting of the day's events, or our rundown of what we know about the suspect so far. And you can keep up with Thursday's developments here. Official details were few on the dead and injured, but loved ones have begun publicly identifying some of those who were killed. The attack prompted questions about whether the protective bollards that had been removed to make way for new ones would have prevented the carnage. It also sent shockwaves through the city, affecting one major event planned for the city and casting a shadow on another. The Allstate Sugar Bowl game between Notre Dame and Georgia was postponed until today, and local officials began working with the organizers of next month's Super Bowl about what steps should be taken next. The attack, which was the subject of intense international news coverage, drew condemnation from President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump. Tyler Bridges has that story. Thanks for joining us, we appreciate the trust you place in our reporting. Check back throughout the day for more developments from The Times-Picayune. Chad |
