Allowing teachers to carry loaded guns in school would cause more problems than it would solve, yet the state Senate Education Committee has approved a bill to allow school personnel to pack much more than their lunches. This purports to be a public safety measure, but the bill neither mandates nor funds firearms or public safety training for those who would have the guns at school. Read more>>

The process would be simple. Each district-run school would negotiate a performance agreement with a non-district authorizer. In exchange, it would get the same freedoms enjoyed by charters. If the school succeeded, then its contract would be renewed, and it would continue operating. There would be no school takeovers. Read more>>

Legislators have given final approval to a bill making the Indiana state superintendent an appointed position. The bill allows current Superintendent Jennifer McCormick to run for a second term in 2020. The winner of that election will be the last superintendent chosen by the voters. Read more>>

Gov. Paul LePage called for Maine to “right-size” K12 education in the state through regional consolidation of what he portrayed as bloated administrative ranks with nearly 150 superintendents. “If you had one superintendent per county, it would be too much in Maine,” LePage said.
