Refinery Terminal Fire Company celebrates 75 years of protecting industries in the Coastal Bend The Refinery Terminal Fire Company (RTFC) is celebrating 75 years of protecting the lives and property of its members. Established in 1948 as a reaction to the industrial disaster in Texas City in April of 1947, the RTFC today is the largest non-profit industrial firefighting group in the United States. Operating as a co-op, the Fire Company is funded by its members and protects their assets. With over 21 industry members in its ranks, the RTFC provides the best in equipment and trained personnel to support its members employing 80 firefighters with six fire chiefs in the Corpus Christi and Gregory-Portland area. The company is trained in state-of-the-art industrial fire protection, prevention, inspection, hazard mitigation, training services, in-plant services, and technical support services. KRIS-TV NBC/CW+ 6 CORPUS CHRISTI 1 person dead following house fire near downtown Dallas, officials say One person is dead following a house fire in Dallas early Friday morning. A little after 3:15 a.m., firefighters were sent to a structure fire call at a home located on the 3100 block of Bryan Street, just outside of downtown. Dallas police officers originally called in the incident after smelling smoke as they were reporting off-duty. Officials said they proceeded to investigate the smell until they found the home where smoke was coming from. When Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived, they saw "lots of smoke" coming from a one-story residence, officials said. And not long after, fire was seen coming through the roof. Firefighters were shortly able to contain the fire and isolate the damage—mostly within the attic—and declared an "out taps" at 4:32 a.m. Crews pulled one person from the home; however, they were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Port Arthur Fire Department dive team sonar training leads to discovery, removal of truck from water The Port Arthur Fire Department's dive team training led to the discovery and removal of a truck from a waterway. The vehicle was found in a waterway along Savannah Avenue, not far from the Motiva Enterprises refinery in Port Arthur. Port Arthur Fire Chief Greg Benson tells 12News the vehicle was found by dive teams who have been looking for cars and trucks in area water as part of training. This is done to train divers on using sonar technology. "The intent is with the use of sonar in training when there is an incident, that they are more familiar with the equipment and the capability to initiate an operation," Benson tells 12News. Benson says the truck they removed Thursday was discovered a few weeks ago during another training. He says removing the car is also good training. It was a reunion of sorts outside the Shepherd Center Thursday. Atlanta Fire Rescue Lieutenant Mark Quick had met a group of DeKalb County firefighters once before. "Oh! I would say it's kind of surreal," Quick said. He doesn't remember much about the night of Jan. 15 along Snapfinger Road. He was off duty and drove up on a really bad car wreck. He immediately jumped out to help but was hit by a passing vehicle. Moments later the DeKalb firefighters arrived. WSB-TV ABC 2 ATLANTA A decade after train derailment in southwestern New Jersey, questions linger over rail safety and public health PHOTOS: Trisha Dello Iacono was preparing to host a children's playdate on Nov. 30, 2012, when she received a phone call from her mother, telling her to tune in to the news. A train carrying a colorless flammable gas called vinyl chloride derailed less than four miles from her home, in Paulsboro, N.J. After researching the carcinogen, Dello Iacono placed towels around her windows and doors. But it wasn't long before she felt a sugary burn in her mouth. "I remember it so vividly. It tastes sweet, but it tastes like a chemical sweetness that you know something is not right," Dello Iacono said. "And then I started feeling like a tight band was around my head." An hour or so earlier, Glenn Roemmich, the captain of the volunteer fire department, was sleeping in on his day off. He woke up to an urgent dispatch about a train that had partially fallen off a bridge. WHYY-TV PBS 12 PHILADELPHIA Massachusetts police warn of dangerous 'Trouble Bubble' spicy gum TikTok challenge VIDEO: A Massachusetts police department is issuing a warning about a new TikTok challenge — after it put almost a dozen students in the hospital. Southborough police warned students not to try Trouble Bubble gum, which is sold on Amazon. Police say it contains the same active ingredient as police pepper spray, oleoresin capsicum. Police-level pepper spray is normally rated to 1 to 2 million Scoville heat units, the measurement of the amount of heat someone feels when they come into contact with the substance. The gum is rated at 16 million Scoville heat units. For comparison, Carolina Reaper peppers — currently the highest Scoville-rated peppers — contain 1.5 million to 2.2 million Scoville heat units. Jalapenos generally range from just 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville units. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
