KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Large air tanker stationed in Abilene aids in wildfire defense efforts VIDEO: The Abilene Regional Airport is stationing one large air tanker. Air tankers play a key role in helping firefighters on the ground battle wildfires. "So this is an RJ85, it is a large air tanker, also known as a LAT," Cassidy Ince, with the Texas A&M Forest Service, said. "You can carry up to 3,000 gallons of retardant and we just have one large air tanker in the state right now, which is right here in Abilene." Ince said the tanker drops fire retardant on the ground during wildfires to help attempt to slow down the spread. "It gives our ground crew some time to respond, figure out what their needs are, order more resources," Ince said. "If they need extra help, it can also provide quick structure protection and help us save human lives and property a lot quicker." KLTV ABC 7 TYLER ‘Happy and shocked:' Payne Springs Volunteer Fire Department receives FEMA grant for new equipment VIDEO: The Payne Springs VFD recently received a $230,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from FEMA to purchase brand new self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA). The equipment is essential for firefighters and allows them to breathe clean air in emergency situations. With the grant money, the department has ordered 25 new sets at around $9,000 each. Fire Chief Adam Robinson said they were pleasantly surprised to be selected for the grant. "This was actually the first time, if ever, in at least over 10 years that we've applied for an Assistance for Firefighting Grant," he said, "and to get it on our first try is amazing, and we are very happy, very happy and shocked." The VFD is one of 17 firefighting crews in the state of Texas that was selected for the grant this year. Replacing the SCBAs for the team was a top priority. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

New Hampshire highway closed after crash leaves logging truck hanging over wall VIDEO/PHOTOS: A logging truck flipped over in a crash that left its trailer hanging over a wall on a highway in New Hampshire on Friday morning. The southbound side of Interstate 293 near Exit 6 in Manchester was closed to traffic following the wreck, according to New Hampshire State Police. The truck driver and the driver of a sedan also involved in the crash were taken to Elliot Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Video from the scene showed the truck's cab flipped over and blocking traffic on the highway, while the dangling trailer partially blocked a road below. State police urged drivers to seek an alternate route until further notice and traffic was being detoured off Exit 6. "It is estimated that it will take several hours to remove the tractor-trailer," state police wrote in a post on X. WFXT-TV FOX 25 BOSTON Massachusetts governor signs bill to help protect firefighters from equipment containing PFAS A new law looks to change how forever chemicals are used in firefighting gear. At a signing ceremony on Beacon Hill on Thursday, Governor Maura Healey signed a bill into law meant to protect firefighters from harmful PFAS in their equipment which have been linked to higher rates of cancer. This crucial law requires firefighting equipment manufacturers to provide written notice to local, state government, and other buyers if their equipment contains forever chemicals. Currently only gear containing PFAS is considered up to code because of the chemical's thermal stability and water resistant properties. But, national and state firefighter organizations warn that their gear has caused high rates of cancer diagnosis and death among their colleagues. WLEX-TV NBC 18 LEXINGTON Human parvovirus is on the rise among kids in the U.S.: What parents, caregivers should know As students across the country begin a new school year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning about an uptick in a highly-contagious respiratory virus. The virus, known as parvovirus B19, is on the rise across the United States, and particularly in children ages 5 to 9, the CDC said in an Aug. 13 health warning. There are seven things for parents and caregivers to know about the virus. Parvovirus B19 is highly transmissible because it is spread from person to person via respiratory droplets. People who interact closely with children -- including at schools and daycare centers -- are at a higher risk for infection, according to the CDC. Parvovirus B19 infections are most common in late winter, spring, and early summer. ABC NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
