On Thursday, the country passed a critical milestone. The US Food and Drug Administration's advisory committee recommended the agency grant emergency use authorization to Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine. First responders in Houston said this is a huge step to help stop the spread of the virus. They've been working since this pandemic began and now there is help on the way. "Well it is good news and I look forward to that vaccine being available especially for first responders," Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said. Around 3,800 firefighters that are involved with pre-hospital care and transport will qualify under the Phase 1 Alpha Group to be eligible to take the first round of vaccines once the FDA signs off, according to Peña. "That's encouraging for us. 2020 has been challenging for us, first responders, everyone really," he said.

Irving Firefighter Aaron Donohue was released from the hospital Thursday, Dec. 10, after being severely injured last Saturday when he was struck by a wrong-way driver while working a crash scene. "The outpouring of support for Aaron, his family, and the Irving Fire Department has been overwhelming. Please continue to keep Aaron in your thoughts and prayers during his road to recovery," the Irving Fire Department said in a statement Thursday. Irving Police said crews were in the westbound lanes of the 3100 block of Highway 183 at around 3:45 a.m., and the freeway was shut down due to a crash when Donohue, 30, was hit. According to police, 23-year-old Yajaira Estrada Calderon of Arlington was going eastbound on the freeway and drove into the crash scene, hitting Donohue.

Seven years after it was approved by voters, the city of Round Rock celebrated the grand opening of its Fire Station No. 3 on Thursday. "We are just very proud that we are able to see it open and serve this district even better than before," Round Rock Fire Chief Robert Isbell said. "I'm also very proud of the commitment of our community in public safety here in Round Rock." Fire Station No. 3, at 221 Sundance Parkway in La Frontera shopping center, will serve the southwestern Round Rock area, including La Frontera, the Chisholm Valley neighborhood and Dell campus. City officials said the location was decided upon after a data analysis indicated it would provide better access to major roads for improved response times. The facility replaces a station that was built in 1991 on Rawhide Drive.

The Houston Fire Department responded Thursday to a fire in the 100 block of E. Little York, east of the North Freeway. According to the Houston Police Department, the fire was caused by a ruptured gas main line at a strip center. Video from SkyEye shows a piece of construction equipment, which appears to have hit the gas line, engulfed in flames. HFD says firefighters allowed the gas to burn until a shutoff procedure is developed. Firefighters sprayed water on the building to try and keep it cool. There were no injuries reported.

A call crackles over a two-way radio with an announcement that normally would get multiple fire trucks rolling. Instead, the dispatch, about a house fire with victims trapped inside, is only a drill meant to get the attention of a brand new investigative team with the San Antonio Fire Department. "They will go, they will assist the fire crews that are there, the battalion chiefs that are there, in determining a cause," said Joseph Arrington, a public information officer for SAFD. The team, which consists of ten members who will work various shifts around the clock, officially goes online Saturday. The recent drill capped off weeks of training, that included the team members becoming state-certified fire investigators.

VIDEO: A massive warehouse fire in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood Thursday morning drew hundreds of firefighters to fight the massive flames, with smoke visible for miles. "We couldn't believe it," said Blanca Valderas, witness. "We were like in shock." The 4-11 alarm fire broke out an auto body supply factory at 4425 W. 16th. Street at about 8:45 a.m., as many workers at the Best Value Auto Body Supply had already started their shifts. Chopper 7HD flew over the scene as huge flames and thick smoke could be seen coming from the warehouse. Gloria Ramos, whose husband Raoul has worked at the plant for years, said he frantically called her as flames began to overtake the building. "He said one of the supervisors said there was a fire. They smelled fire on the inside," she recalled. Chicago Fire Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner for Operations Barry Garr said it was "200 feet of fire going down the block" when he arrived on the scene.

VIDEO: The San Francisco Fire Department is reviving a tradition that began and ended seven decades ago: a competition to determine the best-decorated fire station. The year was 1948 when San Francisco firehouses began a fierce competition to be named the best-decorated fire station. The grand prize was $1,000. They went all out, often covering the entire station with ornaments. The competition lasted three Christmases before a labor dispute ended it. Fast forward to 2020, and the fire department has decided to bring the tradition back, with a little help from a sponsor. "The San Francisco firefighters union — I mean, hats off to them! I could not finish my sentence on my idea before they were, ‘we are in!'" said Lt. Jonathan Baxter, spokesman for the San Francisco Fire Department. Now the grand prize is $3,000. The best-decorated firehouse will donate their winnings to the charity of their choice. The public is invited to check out the decorations from a safe social distance.

VIDEO: A 118-year-old firetruck was restored by Willard Fire Chief Ken Scott and his firefighters. The truck, known as Queen City 2, was given to the Willard Fire Protection District from retired assistant chief Bub Herbert who attempted to restore Queen City 2 himself. Scott said it operated in Springfield during 1902 before rolling over during a fire emergency. The truck was eventually delegated to Clear Creek Park in Willard during the 60s. The firefighters finished the restorations by Veterans Day so it could join the parade. Scott said they worked on Queen City 2 until the morning of the parade. You can see the restored firetruck at the Willard Fire Protection District at 240 N. State Hwy Z, Willard, MO 65781.

PHOTOS: An evening news broadcast in March sparked an idea for Kolby Kolbet: Could a space-age looking helmet used in Europe play a role in reducing coronavirus risk while transporting patients in the U.S.? Months and many hours of testing later, the Sea-Long helmet worn by COVID-19-positive patients is now part of medical transport company Life Link III's standard operating procedure when transporting those requiring oxygen. Kolbet, vice president of clinical services for Life Link III, said he believes the company, with several air bases in Minnesota and Wisconsin, is the first in the country to use the helmets as part of medical transport. He hopes others follow their lead. The helmets not only increased the safety of Life Link III employees by containing respiratory droplets, Kolbet said, but they've also shown improved outcomes for patients during transport. Of more than 30 transports during which the positive pressure helmets were used as of late November, Kolbet said all patients showed improvement in their vitals.

"I owe my life to these guys, Tomey said while meeting them again on Thursday for a gratitude dinner. Shaunte Reid, a 911 dispatcher, answered the call and sent Coral Springs Fire Department personnel from Station 71 to Tomey's home. They took him to the Northwest Medical Center in Margate. A medical team at the emergency care hospital performed surgery to treat the heart attack in progress. They inserted a stent, a tiny wire mesh tube, to expand a clogged artery that feeds the heart muscle.
