Shane Glaiser appointed Round Rock fire chief Shane Glaiser was appointed Round Rock fire chief by unanimous vote in a special called meeting of City Council on Feb. 10. Glaiser was previously appointed interim chief in October 2021 following the departure of former Chief Robert Isbell. Isbell left the city at that time to serve as fire chief in Stephenville. According to the city, Glaiser has served the city of Round Rock's Fire Department in every position with a 27-year career in the department preceding his appointment. "He's earned everything that he's about to have bestowed upon him," City Manager Laurie Hadley said. "I can't think of anyone better to lead this department into the future." In his time with the RRFD, Glaiser acted as the project lead for the city's Public Safety Training Center, which was completed in 2018. COMMUNITY IMPACT NEWSPAPER Frisco Police, Firefighters Recognized For Rescue Of 15-Year-Old Boy Trapped in Burning Home VIDEOS: Members of the Frisco police and fire departments are being recognized after rescuing a 15-year-old boy last month seconds before his home was engulfed in flames. According to officials, first responders were called to a house fire in the 11900 block of Tyler Drive on Jan. 30 and learned after arrival that the teen was trapped on the second floor of the residence with smoke and flames spreading throughout the house. Dispatchers worked to keep the 15-year-old boy calm and relayed information to police officers as they searched for a way to reach the teen. Officials said officers made several calls into the house through the open front door trying to locate the 15-year-old but received no response. The officers were unable to enter the home due to thick, black smoke filling the entryway. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Details emerge after six vehicles go up in flames aboard car hauler in Electra VIDEO: New details emerge after six vehicles aboard a car hauler caught fire near the intersection of U.S. 287 and Midway Church Road in Electra Thursday afternoon. Authorities responded a call around 12:06 p.m. on Thursday, February 10 of a potential vehicle fire on the exit ramp from U.S. 287 at Midway Church Road in Electra. According to authorities who spoke to our crew at the scene, crews with the Iowa Park Fire Department, Electra Fire Department and Punkin Center Fire Department aided in extinguishing the blaze. Authorities said all six vehicles aboard the car hauler were badly burned, along with the trailer. The driver of the semi truck pulling the trailer initially pulled off of U.S. 287 at Midway Church Road when the vehicles caught fire. According to reports, the driver detached and left the scene, but officials said he later returned in his cab. KFDX-TV NBC 3 WICHITA FALLS 6 home fire deaths in Bexar County this year, officials urge residents to follow safety precautions What remains of a smoldering home in the Denver Heights neighborhood are the charred memories of life lived by a 91-year woman. San Antonio firefighters responded to a house fire in the 200 block of Utah street on the city's east side just after 1 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters rescued an elderly man from the inferno who was transported to the hospital in critical condition. A battalion chief on scene were notified of an unaccounted woman, which prompted an immediate search. However, the intensity of heat and flames became too dangerous for crews inside the house, leading the chief pulling out the interior firefighters. Fire crews later re-entered the home and discovered the 91-year-old woman at the rear of the structure. There've been a total of 6 house fire deaths across Bexar County in 2022. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Follow-up: ABC-7 interviews firefighter who battled El Paso hotel fire It's been days since the De Soto Hotel went up in flames and still it seems a miracle the fire was contained to just the one building. Seventy firefighters fought the flames, the first to arrive on the scene were the crew from Station 1, which is about half a mile from the De Soto Hotel. At 5:13 p.m. Friday, just two minutes after the call came in, a crew from Station 1 was there. "You should see it from the top it's like looking at the earth or the moon from outer space," Firefighter George Garcia said. He is the captain of Ladder 1, a fire truck that helped battle the fire for hours. Seeing the fire from above is a perspective only firefighters got Friday night, one that was never planned when crews first arrived. Initially, Station 1 sent a crew in through the front door and ran a line up to the second floor. KVIA-TV ABC/CW 7 EL PASO East Texas first responders seeing rise in brush fires due to drought conditions Many East Texas counties are struggling to contain brush fires that have been more common because of the extreme drought conditions. The Rusk County Fire Department said 95% of fires within the last month have been caused by unattended burning. The department responded to 26 burning fires in one weekend, but typically when there are no drought conditions that number is zero. Officials said the main preventative measure is to never leave a fire unattended. Unfortunately, a homeowner in North Rusk County, learned that lesson the hard way. "We still see people with unattended burns that get out, such as this case. It was a close call someone was inside their house with their children with the house catching on fire, and luckily they caught it in time but if not it could've been a worse case scenario" said Rusk County Fire Marshall Terry Linder. Denny's restaurant, Love's Truck stop in Indiana destroyed by large fire VIDEO: Emergency crews worked to extinguish a large fire in Gary, Indiana. Firefighters responded to the 3100 block of Grant Street just before 11 a.m. for reports of a fire at the Denny's restaurant and Love's Truck stop. SkyCam 9 flew over the scene. Gary Police posted on Facebook asking drivers to stay away from the area. "All commuters: we are asking you to divert your traffic away from Grant Street between the expressway and 35th Avenue. The Gary Fire Department is working hard to contain the fire at Love's Truck Stop. Please keep the area clear for emergency vehicles. Do not come to the area or on to the property to sightsee or take photos," the post said. Employees at nearby businesses said they smelled smoke and went outside to see what was going on. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO New surveillance video shows firefighters preventing attempted carjacking of rescue truck in Florida VIDEO: Surveillance video has been released showing a fire truck on the move after someone attempted to steal it from a fire station in Lauderhill. "The person, the male subject, became aggressive with the firefighters," said Lauderhill Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Levy. He climbs into the truck, lights it up and throws it into reverse, before eventually being dragged out. Police said his name is Freddie Ross. They said, Tuesday night, at Fire Station 110 in Lauderhill, a crew returning from a call saw something strange and got on their radios. He kept walking toward the ambulance, and that's when things escalated. "The firefighters were trying to calm the situation by talking to him through the window," said Levy. He wasn't giving up. "The male subject was able to force his way through the window of the driver's side of the ambulance onto where the driver was sitting," said Levy. WSVN-TV FOX 7 MIAMI Fatal fires in Missouri, Maryland expose vacant home risks Thick smoke billowed from the vacant, crumbling St. Louis house, but Benjamin Polson knew homeless people might be inside taking refuge from the January chill. So the 33-year-old firefighter went in. It cost him his life. Eleven days later, three Baltimore firefighters died when an abandoned row home collapsed. The same vacant house was the site of another fire seven years earlier that injured three firefighters. Vacant homes dot the landscape — urban and rural — across the U.S. They're far more prone to catch fire, and because the structures are often compromised, they are especially dangerous for firefighters. Officials in St. Louis and Baltimore are looking at ways to reduce those risks. St. Louis fire leaders are doing an inventory of every vacant home — all 10,000 of them — with plans to develop a computerized database so firefighters know what they're getting into. KMOV-TV CBS 4 ST. LOUIS Virginia firefighter once played football in the NFL: 'I made my dream come true' Even with six years of fighting fires under his belt, Renard Cox approaches his job with the excitement of a rookie. "I love it. I love putting this uniform on every day," Cox said. "If you've ever been at this station when tones go off, it is a rush." The veteran of the Richmond Fire Department thrives on helping strangers in need. Protecting his roots on the city's south side from Station 17. "This is one of my dreams as a kid," Cox said. "I used to come and frequently play in this district. So this is like home." His fellow firefighters are a true band of brothers and sisters. "We're not just a team. We're a family," he said. The 43-year-old Richmond firefighter takes pride in the task at hand. "It could be three or four o'clock in the morning. Tones go off. I'm wide awake," Cox said. "It's go time." WTVR-TV CBS 6 RICHMOND While awaiting updated CDC guidance, here's the data states are using to lift COVID-19 restrictions States that recently announced plans to lift either indoor or school mask mandates have at least two things in common: Hospitalization rates are on the decline, and all except one have a larger share of fully vaccinated residents than the national average. Most of the governors in those states have linked these metrics to their moves to lift some Covid-19 mitigation measures. That's raising questions about whether these metrics should play a larger role in mitigation decisions nationwide -- more than Covid-19 case counts. Meanwhile, shifts to phase out state mask mandates conflict with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidance to continue wearing masks in areas with "high" or "substantial" Covid-19 transmission, which includes about 99% of US counties.
